Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Zoo News 2022

It is good to see that the Cameron Park Zoo will be continuing with gerenuk once their new hoofstock barn is complete — they were down to a single male prior, and I was afraid they would abandon the species. The species is in desperate need of new holders and more births! Hopefully they can work together with the breeding group at Dallas as a breeding hub.

The tufted deer for The Wilds is an interesting transaction. Unless they build a new enclosure for them, I can only see them either being mixed with or replacing the Chinese goral.

Is there any hope for goral in US Zoos, or is it pretty certainly a phase out of the few left?

Per last year's TAG meetings, the Chinese goral will likely be managed to extinction. The species has had really poor breeding success despite a lot of effort and institutional interest, and the population is aging quickly. There have been four calves born in the last year, which is better than most years, and the facilities housing them seem committed to them, however, so we might still see them around for awhile longer.

I just dont get it. Goral are attractive, interesting exhibit animal, can be in multi species with takin et al. Surely, the poor breeding should have made AZA think what they eere doing wrong a population do not age out of nowhere.

A Masai Giraffe calf was born on April 8 to mother Zainabu and father Phillip. I saw the baby on exhibit yesterday.

Giraffe calf is a male and the zoo’s tallest on record:

The yet-to-be-named calf weighs in at 172 pounds and stands at six foot seven inches, which makes this calf the tallest giraffe calf in the history of the Los Angeles Zoo. This birth marks the fourth calf for Zainabu and the sixth calf for Phillip.

What year did the last Black Rhinoceros die or get transferred to another zoo? A Black Rhino died there in 2001 and in that article, it said that they still had two other ones.

I'm surprised about a Harbor seal being born at the zoo! I wonder if that Sea lion death was from their older male.

An update to the Vision Plan has been announced and published, with FAQ on the page regarding the new plan. Some areas have changed to reflect their more focus on California native habitats. Also there isn’t a proposed list of animals per region like last time with the exception of labels on the concept art to illustrate what it may look like.

I was at the LA Zoo today. Both walk-through aviaries are closed to reduce any exposure to avian influenza.

The open, non-glass viewing area at the bachelor gorilla exhibit is closed off. From what I was told by a keeper, some visitors complained about HJ (Hasani Jr.) throwing poop at them.

The new Bean Sprouts cafe is open in South America.

Are bird flu cases spiking in the west coast or something? When I visited California in February, basically the height of the pandemic, all the zoos there had their birds fully on exhibit. Its strange that just as the east coast zoos start to ease their closures, LA heightens theirs.
