Then how come they just mentioned him?
Welcome to ZooChat, looks like you joined this summer. Your question could only be answered by the zoo, but zoos do not always mention transfers/births/deaths/etc. Many of the long time members here share information from various sources when available, population lists, etc. That being said, the LA Zoo is actually very transparent in animal transactions and you can find those often here on this thread, and tied to their board meeting minutes as well. I am certain it was mentioned that they acquired a new male Okapi there, but the animals also are not typically mentioned by name. Typically just if it was a male or female from that species.

The post in question was a post in recognition of World Okapi Day, which was yesterday. The Zoo was just highlighting the okapi they have in celebration of the day, not announcing a new arrival.

I would appreciate if someone would be able to find out the current state of affairs around babirusa at LA Zoo!

LA has one female named Kristina who was born in May 2014 in LA. Peanut Butter, their male, passed away in September 2023. Their 2 daughters, who were born in July 2021, moved to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo earlier this year.

From my recent visit.

The Swan Habitat pool has been remodeled and filled with water with a running waterfall.

Some updates from my recent visits:

  • A Kikuyu colobus monkey was born this month and is visible on exhibit with the rest of the colobus monkeys.
  • Misty the giant river otter has arrived from the Jacksonville Zoo, however, the exhibit is temporarily closed for exhibit repairs.
  • Both young male Masai giraffes ("Shaq" and his younger brother) left this month.
  • The blue-billed curassow exhibit is temporarily closed. I believe they're awaiting the new breeding pair. The previously unsigned second part of the exhibit to the right is currently occupied by an unsigned peacock.
  • The rhinoceros hornbill exhibit is temporarily closed. The yellow-footed rock wallabies that had been in that exhibit have been moved to what was most recently the cape rock hyrax exhibit in the "Drylands" section of the zoo in the roundhouse that also houses the ring-tailed lemurs and the Ruppell's sand fox.
  • Both walk-through aviaries are closed for modifications.
  • Some of the François' langurs have been moved into the former white-faced saki exhibit in the roundhouse with the king vulture and spectacled owl in the South America section. The entrance to the roundhouse is blocked off, though. The original François' langur exhibit has remained closed for repairs since early May.

Interesting!

In the Fresno thread it was alluded to that a babirusa female had recently been transferred out to Fresno's Chaffee Zoo from LA Zoo. Just note the comments at #52 in the Fresno Zoo 2024 thread!

The link refers to one of the LA Zoo monthly zoo updates and minutes (mid April 2024).

Whereas they do not mention which individual babirusa was loaned to Fresno Zoo. It is quite possible that the mother to the two LA Zoo offspring already at Fresno have been joined up by their mother. Perhaps one of the Fresno Zoo regulars can confirm that there are now 3 babirusas at Fresno (if that is true).

The 2 females calves have already been at Fresno Zoo since 2021!

Kristina, the mother of the 2 babirusas in Fresno, remains in LA. She had to have a Caesarean section when she was pregnant with them and they ended up having to be hand-reared. The sisters were always on exhibit together in LA and moved together to Fresno in May 2024.

The April 2024 Animal Transactions Report notes a loan transfer of 1 female babirusa to Fresno and a separate sale of 1 female babirusa to Fresno. This accounts for the 2 babirusa sisters now in Fresno.

Thanks for clarifying the situation around the babirusas at LA Zoo. I assume that female Kristina will remain at LA Zoo indefinitely and no longer be bred (she is now 9+ years old).
