That's a shame, but if I'm reading it right... tapirs are in. Any guesses on if it's the mountains, Baird's, or both?

Some zoo projects change so much over time that they are barely recognizable once the finished exhibit is unveiled to the public. The illustrated drawing of L.A.'s Campo Gorilla Reserve shows a lush forest with loads of tall trees and thick grass. The finished enclosures look nothing like the photo.:)

Those tall trees are still available and sitting right outside Campo Gorillia Reserve. But the cost to get them planted now, after the project has been completed would probably be phenomenal (giant cranes and huge excavations).

My hope is for the the Baird's Tapirs to be exhibited in the new Rain Forest, and the Mountain species given several new and enlarged yards in the remaining vacated space of the South American section. Maybe a new habitat for Jaguars as well, and possibly a large aviary for the Andean Condors. The opening of the Rain Forest in 2012 should create many vacated structures to provide the space. All that will be needed are the necessary funds.

I was reading in the link provided by BlackRhino that the Jaguar exhibit was taken off because they were over budget. The first plan was to remove the Tapir exhibit, but that would have left a big hole in the middle of the exhibit, so they decided to remove the Jaguar exhibit. It says that they will focus elsewhere for a new Jaguar exhibit. I did hear once that there was plans to completely renovate one of the c-shaped exhibits for the Jaguar just like they did for the snow leopards, but I haven't heard anything about that in a while.

I'm also hoping for Baird's Tapirs as they would fit the theme better than Mountains. Also, I've heard Mountain Tapirs being phased out, so I don't really know what will happen to them.

Also, I was reading that Harpy Eagles are also confirmed.

I keep hearing about the phasing out of Mountain Tapirs, but still hope L.A. can resolve something with one of the South American governments. And the phasing out of many species in North American zoos has been discussed elsewhere in this forum, and literally angers me. I don't want to see only a handful of species replicated in every major zoo wherever I travel across the continent. I believe that zoos should be preserving as many species in captivity as possible, for their natural habitats may be destroyed even in our lifetime!:(
