Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo News

Baby Hippo

Our newest addition to the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo has been named, by popular vote, Monreaux. Named of course for our city Monroe and the suffix common with our French Creole background. Our adult hippo, Penelope, has taken tremendous interest in the young male, and they can be heard communicating to each other throughout the zoo. Hoofstock keepers have recently began to keep the exhibit door separating the two hippos slightly ajar to encourage familiarity. The staff is hoping for an actual introduction soon, though precautions are being taken and speed is not a concern, these two have all the time in the world to become acquainted with one another!

Since this page hasn't been updated since June 2015, I think it's time for a little refresher on what has happened before we go onto the 2021 news.

Since June 6th, 2015, the zoo has gained a new splash pad area as well as a new train engine. The zoo acquired (0.0.2) llama, an (0.0.1) addax, a (0.0.1) fox (species not specified), and a (0.0.1) mountain lion from the Crossett Crossland Zoo (which is now closed permanently) in November 2016. The zoo also acquired a (0.0.1) Chilean degu in October 2019 as well as a (1.0) American black bear named Oscar in 2019. Zoo births include a baby African crested porcupine that was born in late 2019-early 2020. Zoo deaths include a 31-year-old Nile hippo named Penelope due to a heart condition in May 2019, and a 22-year-old African lion named Basha who passed in March 2019. In July 2019, a zookeeper was attacked by a warthog but suffered no life-threatening injuries.

In late August 2020, Hurricane Laura hit, causing extensive damage to many parts of the zoo, which resulted in about ~10+ weeks worth of cleanup. In October 2020, it was announced that Tom Pearson became the newest zoo director.
