Chelewa @ Cabárceno

Is there any news update on Chelewa's baby- is she suckling it okay?

I've been following the situation in Cabárceno as closely as possible. A Flickr friend from Prague said the baby is being fed, but did not quote a source. And there is a quite recent video on Facebook showing Chelewa + her baby for the first time in the outdoor enclosure. So AFAIK the baby is still with her mother, and I think by now they would have taken it from her if it did not drink. Although on the available photos Chelewa's breasts look as if they don't have even a spoonful of milk to give ...

Sad news indeed.:( But Chelewa has shown she has good mothering ability and hopefully will become pregnant again by Niky soon.

Shasha going to Münster in Germany

Sakina has moved from Münster to Gaia Zoo today. Shasha from Howletts is going to join the group in Münster soon

Which gorilla is moving to Howletts in exchange for Shasha? Male, female?

Perhaps a new unrelated male for the 'Kijo' group? If so it would be the first time they have brought in a male from the 'outside' Zoo population but virtually all their own spare males are related to their groups now. Or will it be an unrelated female?

Maybe the move of Shasha is part of a more complex exchange. It could benefit both, Howletts and the rest of european gorillas. Two females from Howletts (PortLympne) for two Howletts unrelated females, plus a sub-adult male gorilla from an interesting bloodline.

The four males that are going to Longleat are Boulas from Twycross, Kesho from London and Alf and Evindi from Dublin, so Oumbie is staying at Twycross. The new male that is going to London is Kumbuka from Paignton. Bitono, Jah, Popa, Bitanu(Barney) and Otana might be going as a bachelor group to Rhenen Zoo in Holland. Shasha might be going to Munster zoo and Yene at Port lympne might be going to another zoo in Germany.

That is more workable than three adult males and it makes sense for Twycross to retain Oumbie. It would be nice for Kesho to see his two younger brothers again though not sure how he will get along with Boulas- probably okay as he lived with his father 'Harry' at Dublin until not that long ago. But the move of the two younger males from Dublin will leave them with a very small group at present(1.2 + the two babies).

Moving Kumbuka to London is taking a big risk given his handraised/bachelor group background. A fine looking male so if this happens I hope it works out breeding wise- I'd give his chances of success as 50/50 I suppose, maybe less.;)

Does that mean Rhenen will take two groups from Howletts/PL.(These and the biggest ones)? Any plans for the four middle-sized ones that live in the Pavilion near the Colobus/De Brazzas at Port Lympne? This is the group I originally thought would go to Longleat.

The 4 Young males from Kifu's group are currently staying at PL there is no plans on them going anywhere at the moment. The older Bachelors look like they are staying at PL with Boumi's death and Mataki(Bonz) being permanantley seperated and apparently Kush and Djimu had an incident with Ambam so this group is basically falling apart i dont know what will happen to this group.

Its ashame that Kesho is infertile as he really is a good looking male but im sure he wont mind seeing his little brothers, I think Dublin should try and get in another female as Harry is proving quite fertile and with the 2 young males going there is only the 2 babies and Harry, Lena and Mayani Possibly Gypsy or Jade from St martin la plaine or Yene from PL could join this little family :)

Thanks for information about the biggest males at PL. Sounds like they have had enough of each other really.

I don't think Kesho is particularly attractive but he has a lovely nature! Have a look at the gallery photos of Kumbuka(Paignton) though, he's a real stunner.;)

He is but i heard that he lives solitary ?? If so and he is a hand reared gorilla this move might be more for socialisation than breeding ??
