Makoua (Burgers' Zoo) gave birth on October 24th 2013 a male baby sired by Bauwi. This is the fourth gorilla to born at this zoo this year and there is still one more pregnant female, Shatilla.

The good news is that the handraised Makoua, who has been a problem gorilla the past few years is now succesfully caring for her own young. So she has integrated succesfully in a gorilla group!

Howletts / Port Lympne
On November 1, the females Tebe, Sangha and Oundi were moved from Howletts to PL. Their "Palace of the Apes" had been empty since Djala's family went to Gabon. Reason: better breeding opportunities. They will be introduced to Kouillou's group that will move there too. (Info courtesy of a Howletts volunteer)

Female, Chelewa at Cabarceno gave birth yesterday (5th November) Mother and baby are said to be doing well
The baby has been sexed as a male.
Port Lympne update.
The Kouillou group has been transferred( on 20/11) over from Howletts to the 'Palace of the Apes' which was empty since Djala's group was returned to Africa. There they will join the three females from the Kifu group, which were transferred earlier in the month.

Before the transfer, female Emba was moved into Kifu's group.

I guess these moves (three females out, one in) surrounding Kifu's group are to try stimulate further breeding from females that haven't bred for a while + one is a Kifu daughter.

I think so too. A volunteer at Howletts told me it's all about "better breeding opportunities". And Mushie from the late Kijo's group is now with Kifu, too.
That means Kifu lost three females but has gained two by return.

And Kifu "lost" his son too - blackback Ebeki (10 1/2 years old) was recently moved into ex-Kijo's group but not yet introduced to the others (four adult females and their two offspring). He is supposed to become their new silverback and leader of a breeding group. I guess being the only male around will trigger his hormones and help him to mature and take to his new role.
The group was without an adult male since silverback Kijo died in 2008.

Ebeki is Kijo's grandson but not related to any of the females currently in this group, only to the two male youngsters.
This would presumably have been a very simple transfer across through the indoor building, as the two groups are adjacent to each other.

I had no luck with a Google search.
I guess they have selected Ebeki to keep the continuity of the male line Kisoro - Kijo - Kifu and, equally significantly, to pass on the genes of Tebe, his wild-caught mother.

I think you are correct on both counts, but with the extra factor that, like his father 'Kifu' he is apparently a DA 'favourite' too- is it possible he intends to continue the 'going in with' tradition of Kijo's line with him in the future?

They have so many Gorillas, the chances of anyone taking a photo of one particular blackback in a group and labelling it correctly with a name are pretty remote.
Now he's heading a group there is a much better chance though.

Not wanting to start a discussion about the pros and cons of castration, as I suppose it would not be the first one here. But I'm interested in this issue, so if I'm right, would you please provide a link, Pertinax?
