Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2023

I think the selection will only be from non-castrated males, as outlined above. Castrated males are 'supposed' to stay in their natal groups longterm/for life and not be moved.

Is there allready some news about the new leading silverback at Burgers Zoo Arnheim?

Does anybody has info about Quembo? When he moved to Mysore it was told two felmales join him within few weeks but he is stillalone. Not with Thabo and Demba, just alone.

I was at Twycross zoo yesterday, it was confirmed to me by a keeper that Lope will be moving to Zoo du Bassin d’Arcachon. They said the current plans could change but for now they are going ahead and moving Lope.

My guess was the brother duo from Rotterdam who will live with Dishi. Lope is a surprise. I'm curious who will be the other one(maybe Gernot?). And more curious who will be the new silverback in Burgers' Zoo(my personal guess is Azizi from Warsaw). Nakou is physically adult and his brohers also in the time of changing. But they are still in the zoo.

Lope has been on the plan for Zoo Bassin for some while now. I think the other male will be from Europe, not UK. Gernot still quite young and seems compatable with new silverback still.

At Zoo Antwerpen, 20-year-old silverback gorilla Matadi died unexpectedly yesterday of a double severe viral and bacterial respiratory infection (COVID-19 and Bordetella).

The male gorilla had not been feeling well for some time. Like the females of the gorilla group, he was suffering from a cold. He was sniffling, coughing frequently and short of breath. Veterinarian and caretakers monitored his condition closely. The ladies soon recovered, but in Matadi's case, the symptoms persisted. He felt weak and did not eat. Therefore, the vet started treating him.

Nevertheless, Matadi's health suddenly deteriorated rapidly. Heart massage and several resuscitation attempts unfortunately could not normalise the heart rate.

Big shock!:(I knew Matadi well as a young gorilla at Twycross, from when he was just a couple of months old. Also at Paignton where he lived several years. Did not expect to hear this...
