Mammal Orders and Families - how many have you seen?

That's right, Chlidonias.

He was in the year below me. He gave a talk a few years ago and I bought a photo he had taken of a captive baiji. You can see a photo in 'Last Chance by See' by Mark Carwardine and Douglas Adams.

I'm surprised you haven't seen a wild bear. How many of the species have you been in range of?

@birdsandbats I just saw my first (and 2nd) wild bear yesterday while hiking the "Stairway to Heaven Trail" in Waywayanda State Park in NJ!! A mom and cub American Black Bear, maybe 30 feet away from the trail!

I was keeping an eye out on the way up, but alas no bears. Then on the way back 2 other hikers on their way up told me they spotted the mother and cub pair 30 minutes earlier near the trailhead. I looked carefully on our way back down in the spot they said, but no bears. Then the 4th member of our hiking party (who had aborted the hike and turned back early) tells me he saw the bears too!

I was starting to feel like the only person in the world who hadn't seen a wild bear haha so I went back one last time to check the first clearing after the trailhead and there they were! At first it was just a dark blob in the grass, until a bear head raised up and then a cub head popped up too. Got to watch them for 5 minutes or so move around on the hill. I had my camera with me and got some pretty great shots! Looking forward to posting them soon.

So for a mini-update that's:

Families: 127/156 total, 57/156 captive only, 61/156 wild & captive, 10/156 wild only

Orders: 22/29, 11 in the wild. Families: 88, didn't add up up wild vs captive. There's ~10 or so more I would have gotten last year if a trip didn't get cancelled :(

Orders 26/29, 22 in the wild. Captive only Dasyuromorpha, Macroscelida, Tubulidentata and Pholidota. Missing the predictable 3! Families to follow next week when I have access to my library!

Following a very successful trip to Uganda and Kenya I'm happy to report another update:

Biggest addition by far was my first Anomalure. A family lifer! My first family lifer since I started keeping track because of this very thread. I was also able to add both the trident and bent-winged bat families thanks to some caves visited in Kenya! There were a couple close calls on seeing Cane Rats, hopefully next time!

The trip also yielded some new wild family lifers (seeing for the first time in the wild), including my first wild Rhinos, African Palm Civet, and hedgehogs (FINALLY! A wild order lifer as well)

Unfortunately I felt under the weather for the final night tour in Uganda and slept in. In doing so I painfully missed out on two more wild family lifers that night in dormouse and potto.

I've also updated the list with two additional bat families from Lynx's Handbook of the Mammals of the World (trident & wing-gland) that hadn't been included in the original lists here.

Still stuck at 26 orders, although I'm now up to 20 seen in the wild thanks to the hedgehogs!

27 families remain, and I intend to keep shrinking that number!!

Did you not look for wild animals in Australia?

Did you not look for wild animals in Australia?

Unfortunately I really didn't. 1st time I visited was back in 2007. I was traveling with my cousins and most free time went to visiting zoos. I did have the good fortune of seeing both Spectacled Flying Foxes and Musky Rat Kangaroo on our Daintree Rainforest tour. The second time I visited in 2018 for only 3 days (in the middle of an Asian trip) and went to Territory Wildlife Park, Perth Zoo and Caversham Wildlife Park. I desperately want to visit some wild animals there and had originally planned for May of 2020 until fires and covid delayed that venture of course.

I'm just amazed there's an entire wild order I beat you to :p

Haha it's a hard wild order to get as an American! I've only been to Europe three times and always chock full of zoo visits with exactly zero wild excursions.

Plus getting wild animals is a more recent goal of mine so now I'm actually trying to fill in these gaps. Just funny I did it in Africa (which I've now also visited 3 times) instead of Europe.

Order Monotremata - I have only seen one species, the Short-Beaked Echidna.

Order Microbiotheria - No show

I seem to recall seeing a feathertail glider of some variety...

Order Afrosoricida - I have seen a few species of tenrec.

Order Macroscelidea - I've seen a few species.

Order Tubulidentata - Two of my local zoos have these.

COVID is curse. Not only has it stopped all possibility of travel overseas, it has also severely limited travel opportunities in Australia. I was planning a trip to Western Australia this month that would probably have added four families. As it is I have only added two families since the above post:

Family Acrobatidae (feathertail gliders)
Family Hypsiprymnodontidae (musky rat-kangaroo)

This puts me at 47 families seen in the wild.

My travel-loving heart goes out to those living in countries that are more locked-down.

I was lucky enough to be able to visit Ecuador & Brazil in May/June and am now just returning from Panama & Chile. I'm excited to update my list with the addition of a NEW ORDER!! Also some new families- now 24 to go- and some more 1st time wild families.

Note: Some of this taxonomy is different from the latest used by Lynx's HMW.
