Mammal Orders and Families - how many have you seen?

The specimen was seen at while whale-watching at Santa Mónica, California.
That day we were looking for a pod of pacific white-sided dolphins, and while whe where looking,

Something bothering me here as I've poked around the various whale watching tours in the greater LA area - a very distinct lack of Pacific White-sided Dolphins. The only ones that even had them listed was the tours operating off the channel islands, and even then they're extremely rare, it's been 2.5 years since they reported any on the sightings log and they operate multiple pelagics. Would seem that general area is not the place to go to find Pacific White-sides, even by special chartered tour. Meanwhile go north to Monterey and the whale watches get them regularly, so if you were targeting white-sides why were you looking where they're apparently extremely rare?

The specimen was seen at while whale-watching at Santa Mónica, California. Obviously more out to sea as these guys are quite shy.

Error on my part because I coppied @Giant Eland list and he has seen the species. Thanks for pointing that out!

@TeaLovingDave I'm confident that I saw both the lisang and the sunda colugos.
As for the pacarana, I think that Floresta Nacional do Iquiri is part of their range. I'll leave to URL for you to see my point:

Maybe, I'm wrong but I remember seeing one. But it could have been a capybara, so I'll leave the species in stand by

Please be respectful because it's not nice, so try to not repeat those comment to me or any other member. Thanks!

@TeaLovingDave I'm not well-aware of the forums policies, but I'm sure there's something that says that insulting in any way a member of the site is not allowed. So at least you could have not commented anything or you could have corrected @Tetzoo Quizzer for being mean, but instead you commented the post and didn't even mentioned anything. I can make mistakes, as @Chlidonias has demonstrated, but the pacarana situation is up to debate, and you could still correct me. I don't have any motives to lie and I'm as open as I can be on a online platform, so why would I lie of seeing an animal? Of course I could have seen another animal/didn't paid to much attention and I'm just ranting without any reason, and I don't want to be rude at you @TeaLovingDave, but just that as a moderator I expected more nice posts, and you're on your right to question, but you could ask in a nicer way. Dont want to sound badly and hope that I didn't offend you in any way, and feel free to correct me. Thanks!

Don't be sorry, I don't mid!
Mountain beaver-Olympic National Park, Washington, U.S.
Tuco-tuco-Neuquén, Argentina.
Chinchilla rats-Santiago, Chile.
Spalacidae-Ipoh (near Gunung Yong Belar), Malaysia.
Pikas-Garibaldi Park, Vancouver, Canada.
Walrus-Port Clarence, Alaska, U.S.
La Plata Dolphin-Bahía Creek, Argentina.

@WalkingAgnatha If you have any questions I'll be happy to respond at them.

Lots going on here the past few days and as someone who's top goal as become hunting down mammal families I'd like to weigh in.

Some of these aren't too difficult like Tuco-tucos, Pikas and Walrus. I even found multiple Chinchilla Rats and La Plata Dolphins when looking in the right places on a trip last month. So a good question for @Xavier GM would be if he was with his dad (who may have more experience) when he saw those last two I mentioned.

I'd like more details on the Mountain Beaver. People generally don't just randomly find them very often.

The Pacarana is also extremely unlikely, and very rarely encountered wild. There are 12 total living Pacarana pins on iNaturalist, where as Capybara's are ubiquitous. Any visual of the animal would reveal completely different coloration. Would also like to know the circumstances around seeing it, time of day, etc?

No worries, it's the right of everybody to question things, and specially in a public forum, so I do apologise if I sounded a bit rude. I wouldn't have done it better if I was on your place. I just hope no one hates me for all this ranting.

@Great Argus I normally don't do whale-watching with other people when looking for specific species. That day we were looking for a pod of pacific white-sided dolphins, and while whe where looking, a pygmy whale leaped out of the water. At that moment I just thought it was a type of porpoise, but when we folllowed it we saw that it was leaving a trail of "ink". The specimen was seen at 2021, a big whale-watching year for me.

Like @Great Argus I also have some issues with the Pygmy Sperm Whale claim. Firstly they very rarely breach. There's only a handful of photos of this happening online. And then to also witness them expelling ink and notice that easily out in the ocean and not near the shallow coast (like seen in some YouTube videos), just seems way too far fetched.

@Najade the shrew opussum was seen at Parque Tantauco and the pacarana was seen at the Floresta Nacional do Iquiri.
Edit: Both species were seen with the help of locals that were experts. Both experts said that the animals were very hard to find, and thet we were lucky for seeing them.

I visited Parque Tantauco in 2021 and spoke to multiple guides there about Chilean Shrew Opossum and if I remember correctly none of them had ever seen one. It's perhaps the most elusive of an already very elusive order of Mammals. There are 2 living observations on iNaturalist, neither of which are on the island of Chiloe. I spent 5 nights trying to trap for them (25 traps per night) at nearby Parque Tepuhueico, with no luck. So again, @Xavier GM please expand. Where (in what environment) and when did you see it. How long did you spend looking for them. This is the one that gives me the most hesitation out of all of your claims.

And for all of these fantastical claims, I'm not sure anyone has asked yet. @Xavier GM do you or your father have any photographic evidence of any of this? How old are you by the way?

Giant Eland saw Golden Mole in Cape Town.

Yes I did @Tetzoo Quizzer, thanks for the shout out! Which makes me realize I never posted the photos, will have to rectify that asap!

You beat me to both of these points :D although I will expand on your second point and note that as a rule, Kogia tend to move inconspicuously, do not approach boats, and when a boat approaches *them* generally slip under the surface quietly rather than releasing their faecal ink, which is generally reserved for when they are startled or under active attack; none of which matches the behaviour claimed by Xavier.

It wouldn't be the first time someone has done so on this very forum - but in this case I apologise if I was overly suspicious.

When I was younger I would often ‘string’ birds as a way to make myself feel better after a tough session, obviously this was very bad, and I had rightly been questioned about certain sightings by experienced birders (including a discourse on this very forum). However, I have completely got rid of this habit and consciously retracted most of the strung birds from my lifelist.

his thread is quite interesting! It's been fun to see how many species I've seen over the years. I've been lucky enough to have been in 8 countries on my hole life. Those are: U.S, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina & Chile. Visiting Malaysia was great, and tho it was more of a turist trip than a wildlife watch trip, I was able to have on my list dugong, colugos and asiatic linsangs wich are lifers for me. My last trip was a month and a half at SA, and it was great to see silky anteaters, shrew-opossums and botos but couldn't catch any monitos del monte or night monkeys. I would love to see other countries, such as China, Australia and Madagascar, but I don't think that I will in a long time. My only disclaimer is that my list of bat is not that accurate but I'm confident that I've seen al the species I've listed
I'll be using @ThylacineAlive method fro listing and @Giant Eland list.

I'm quite sceptical with your claim of seeing amazon river dolphins in captivity, as you haven't been at Peru, Venezuela(?) or Germany, countries where these species was or is kept. I also agree with @TeaLovingDave about the pygmy sperm whale, as they are very (and when I say very, as if no introvert in the planet could compare to the shyness that this animal has) shy, and would have been long gone before you arrived at a possible scene, and so the animal wouldn't have used any ink, as they use it as a last resort. I'll also raise the question of @Giant Eland of the shrew-opossum. I know mammal experts that have been multiple times at the park that you mention and they didn't have any luck. And you saw one with only one trip?!?! This list seems very suspicious with some animals.

I've been thinking all this days of my decisions were necessary and why I did them. My actions are not justified and I lied in a very bad way. After New Year I wanted to redeem myself, to put things back, even if the outcome for me wasn't good. I wrote an apology to some members for my actions, and @Tetzoo Quizzer gave me a very wise advice to make a public apology. I think it's only fair to make one as I've Ilied to everyone, not just some members. Here's what I wrote to those member and what I say to you:
"I'm sorry for lying, I'm sorry if I hurt anyone. What I did was not right, and I'm ashamed of what I did. I will write this comment to all those I lied to. I hope in the distant future you can forgive me for my bad deeds, and I will wait patiently for your gratitude. You don't have to forgive me, and I will understand, but I wanted to say I'm sorry, just that.
Thank you very much for your time."

I have treated a community that welcomed me with open arms badly, and I feel bad about it. I only ask for your forgiveness, and maybe someday in the distant future we can be friends, or at least get along. In the meantime, I will wait patiently for your kindness.
Thanks for your time, and sorry if I hurt anyone with my actions

Thanks for sharing! Wow you've seen presumably Northern Right Whale but never a Rorqual?

@HayBrand has seen one although it was at a sacred site which I believe he told me only had access for people of Aboriginal descent. They're possible outside there of course, told me had a lot to do with luck and knowing the right people.
They are probably reasonably common but in a vast range and sightings are incredibly rare.

Should be 23 orders and 90 odd families. Fingers crossed will be able to tick another order off this summer :).

I looked back at your original post and looks like you've added around 15 new families in those 5 years. Which ones stood out to you?

And where are you going this summer? I'm guessing either Colugo or American Opossums would be the order you're hoping to add.
