By the late 80s, I think Port Lympne had either acquired its first Maned wolves, or was breeding them already. They were first kept in the timber wolf enclosure on the right hand side of the path, before moving to what is now the dhole enclosure. After the first cubs matured, three or four were housed in what is the current cheetah enclosure, while others were kept in the old brown hyena enclosure (which, years later, is again home to brown hyenas). I think the original breeding female was Juanita, and she remained in what is the current dhole enclosure.
I also remember them breeding at Colchester (around 1997), I don't remember them being at Marwell much later than 1987. They were housed opposite the jaguars in what is the first cheetah enclosure you come to.
I also miss this species at London - they had a pair from about 1999 to 2004. I think they were acquired when the Canadian timber wolf enclosure was redeveloped for anteaters, but then left the collection when 'meet the monkeys' was opened on the site of their enclosure.
Is the one at Shepreth a recent arrival?
