Marineland Canada Marineland Canada News

I am working to clean up the population list for the belugas at Marineland. The last list I had has 42 individuals (15.27). The article above states there are currently 37 whales (9.28). It is possible one of the whales in the list was mislabeled male or there could have been another birth that was not announced. Appears that 6 males may have died since the last list. If anyone can confirm (sources appreciated) any changes to the list below, your help is appreciated!

I was actually at Marineland on a visit back in June, and the current # are correct as I was informed by by trainers (9 males, Andre-Jasper on your list at Friendship Cove and moms & calves and single females at Arctic Cove)

However it’s a bit inaccurate, Yukon, Odin, Bertie, Gimli and Zephyr- while all male, are still at Arctic Cove with their moms due to their ages.

I’ll also add some main things in general from my visit;

• the penguins (11 males) are arguably some of the most popular animals next to the charismatic cetaceans. Seeing the habitat in person to house them was nice, the renovations to the habitat, while not all out with theming or SeaWorld like, were well worth it to revitalize the Aquarium Dome area with foot traffic. They also have Avian Flu precautions for them with signage and a spot to decontaminate your shoes.

• the stadium presentation are 15 minutes. No “super” high energy behaviours or waterworks. Lots of explanation and demonstration of training, and husbandry behaviours. Felt very different with Sonar’s absence. The stadium is open for continued viewing throughout the day too.

• no beluga feeding/petting sessions, previously due to covid and now due to avian flu. Regardless of this the belugas are interactive in and out of sessions with caregivers, in addition to guests.

• a memory wall for Kiska at Friendship Cove, who had passed away this year. Additionally, her former habitat section is used to also accommodate the belugas.

Unfortunately I don’t know who would have passed :(
At the same time, while not necessarily transparent to the public (which would hypothetically have to be dealt with delicately PR wise) I do appreciate them letting the ministry know.

The article also mentions a grey seal passed away :(
That would most likely be the elderly grey seal Delphine, who’s been at the facility since the 80s-90s.

This news feature is exactly what it is ..., if you wish to get to the bottom of any problems, challenges et cetera with marine mammal husbandry, yuo will never resolve these satisfactorily if you do not engage all parties over the arguments involved or their resolution.

Whereas AWS promotes itself as the only "legitimate" authority on animal welfare it is only talking through the media, fighting numerous legal battles while not engaging with senior management and husbandry staff at the Aquarium and Marine Park. I do not find a disenfranchised employee running drones without a permit over a facility or private property any helpful nor good evidence of what issues might exist with the conditions at the Marineland facility or outstanding animal welfare and husbandry concerns.

Suggestions that the water quality would not be good for the 36 / 37 current beluga is hardly strong evidence for just that, it does nothing to determine the general health status of the belugas at Marineland. Further where a court case is already under the hammer it is also undesirable and not done to pass any prior (suggestive or otherwise) judgements while the court cases are pending and legal wrangling on the whys and wherefores et cetera is still on-going.

Now I personally really do not get why the authorities and administration seem so deeply concerned with animal welfare of marine mammals like belugas and orcas in general, yet continue to fail to take effective measures to conserve the marine environments they live in, do not do anything substantial to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, unrestricted economic development, overfishing, marine pollution by humankind, the proliferation of sea transport routes through critical marine areas and a whole lot of other issues with not taking care of our wild spaces and environment in the widest sense of the word.

It seems insane to promote the introduction of a breeding ban on belugas (and orcas), while research into biodiversity of the marine environment and adequate protection of the marine environment remains underresourced, underfunded and ineffective at protecting the species, Arctic environments this ban is supposed to conserve.

I honestly think that this approach is not going to help conservation of marine mammals in situ one bit, will just frustrate critical research - which is enabled by working with captive marine mammals that will be of fundamental use in protecting (including handling, capture and translocation) of wild marine mammals, prevent any effective rehabilitation efforts for stranded whales (including captive space for rescue and rehabilitation) and being another force in creating conservation awareness of and the need for protecting large portions of marine environment for nature and wildlife and prevent their decline over large parts of their range.

Marineland has been found guilty on three charges relating to the treatment of 3 of is black bears who were born in 2020. Marineland agreed to a statement of the facts and was then convicted by the judge. It's not a guilty plea but sound pretty close to one. Their punishment will be decided in August.

Marineland guilty of charges for keeping 3 bears in cramped quarters
What I find incredibly odd- is where were they housed during that period? A behind the scenes area given that they were hand-reared is likely. Was there or was there not a rush to integrate them into the main bear exhibit?

Really unfortunate and considering everything we know now an intermediate habitat adjacent to the main one could’ve fixed it before even becoming an issue

3 black bears who were born in 2020.

Why is Marineland breeding black bears in the first place?

Assuming that these are American black bears, not Asian black bears, well... why bother???

American black bears aren't endangered and they're plentiful in Canada to say the least.

Asian black bears are at least classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, not to mention becoming rare in captivity in North America.

I suppose that I just don't see any justifiable reason for Marineland to be breeding this species, not when every year there's wild orphans in need of placement.

When the news came out 4 years ago, it was noted that they were oops babies, so a result of birth control failure.

Seems like Marineland laid off employees. The park will no longer operate. Marineland Canada is no more. Phil Demers, the protester posted about it a few days ago on Instagram about the laid-off. Maybe Wonderland the amusement park will transform this land. I hope a good zoo or aquarium can take these animals. At least 10 belugas are at the aquarium. With the closing of the Miami Seaquarium. There are so many marine animals that need to be relocated. Not counting other reptiles or mammals. The only “source” to this is that person themselves- and blogs ran with it. Not to mention this has been a repeated rumour by the same individual for the past 4 years now.

Plus going off of prior years, their firing/rehiring process begins late March-April, especially for seasonal jobs.
Marineland of Canada on Instagram: "Come join the Marineland team this summer! Today we are hosting a job fair at our front gate— bring your resume and see all the fun opportunities available this season."

The closure rumours are false; Marineland denies claims of layoffs, closure
Sadly, reported first in the NA beluga thread, there have been 2 passings as reported to the solicitor general.
Two more belugas dead at Marineland, bringing total whale deaths to 17 since 2019

Update; they had both passed from intestinal torsion per this source 2 more belugas dead at Marineland, bringing total whale deaths to 17 since 2019 | Globalnews.ca
Sorry for not searching well the information. I did not know that it was fake news. Sorry for misunderstood

I think the Guy / Gal that did bring in the rumour should be prosecuted for malicious slander ... no matter how much the Marineland may be deficiënt in animal husbandry - that can be improved upon. I do think some management change and focus might help. First and foremost, I find the whole war on whales in captive dolphinaria a complete charade. It will not help conserving belugas in the wild one bit.
