MISSING female monkey Conchetta has been found alive and well four months after being stolen from Alma Park Zoo, north of Brisbane.
When the endangered cotton-top tamarin was returned to Simbio Wildlife Park, south of Sydney, it was thought to be Rico, which was taken from the park last May.
But yesterday morning the monkey was confirmed as 12-year-old Conchetta after handlers recognised her identification chip.
Alma Park spokeswoman Dena Loveday said Conchetta was healthy and would remain with other cotton-top tamarins at the Helensburgh wildlife park before returning home.
"We don't know what she's been through, she will be moved back to Queensland to be cared for by keepers she knows when she is ready," Ms Loveday said. "But we'll have to wait on advice from a vet and she'll have a quarantine process to complete."
The heavily pregnant female was stolen from Alma Park on October 10 last year.
Her male partner Tonto was found bludgeoned to death in a nearby street the same day.
"The chances for her twins are not looking good," Ms Loveday said. "We can only hope."
"The whole violent act was disgusting - Tonto had several internal injuries, the male monkey had obviously put up a fight and paid for it.
"We're in the process of working with the zoo network to look for another breeding partner for her."
A Victorian man, 34, handed Conchetta to Simbio Wildlife Park on Saturday and told police it was bought by a friend on the internet.
