Marmosette rescue/sanctuary

Mico

Hi,
we hope that you can help us in some way.

We visited a place in scotland just over 3 years ago and found that the people there were keeping marmosette monkeys in a small shed within a unit. They also had taken a baby marmosette from its father and were selling it over the internet. Our daughter Lisa at the time was a grade A student with high hopes of becomming a vet. We decided that we would bring the baby home with us and make him a member of the family.
He bonded with our daughter Lisa instantly and has favoured her since the first day.
He has not been caged up but has had free run of the family home apart from 9pm every night when he puts himself to bed.
He was in no way a troubled monkey untill 7 months ago when Lisa left the rails, had a change of personallity ,rebelled against the family and left home and Mico.
Because his best friend has left he has become a very lonely monkey, and
although he tollerates the rest of us he wont let us groom him ect.
It is such a shame as he is a lovely little boy. Since there is no way our
daughter will return home we have painstakingly realised that Mico needs to be re-housed. Hopefully with another monkey.
Our local pet shop where we purchase Micos live food has expressed a huge interest in Mico, but we have since found out that they keep quite a few Marmossets for breeding purposes. They have offered over £1500 for Mico, but to be honest we could not sell him as we consider him to be part of the family. And we don't want him to be stuck in a little cage so as somone can make money out of him.
We are looking for a new home for Mico and hope that a proffesional
organisation or a zoo would be interested in giving Mico a good
life. Please if you think you can help us in some way don't hesitate to get in
touch.

Where do you live? It sounds to me like the best place for Mico would be Monkey World in Dorset - although they're best known for their work with chimps, they also have a couple of absolutely MASSIVE enclosures for marmosets where they can live with their own kind. Some people on this site aren't keen on Monkey World and I admit they can sometimes be a bit negative towards keepers of exotic species, but if you want what's best for the animal then to be honest they are hard to beat!

If that isn't practical, perhaps try getting in touch with any local zoos or animal charities in your area, as they might be able to advise you better. :)

Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre
This is the Monkey world website it has all there contact details on it. If you think Monkey world is too far to travel then try contacting your local zoo or wildlife park. Most zoo's will only be too happy to assist you in finding a new home for him.

Please don't sell him to this petshop. You don't know what they will do to him and he will probably be pushed from pillar to post. A lot of primates end up in a vichous circle of people who don't know how to care for them and many it's a sad fact that many die in these horrible circustances

Many thanks. Monkey World was one of the first places that we contacted.
We have sent at least 2 emails over the last week or so asking for help or advice. They have not made any reply.

Just try any zoo, I would especially recommend Monkey World. I doubt they would turn him down.

Best of Luck
Harry

There is a primate sanctuary in Wales that might be able to help although I don't know if they take in Marmosets. Don't give up on Monkey World althogther though. It's the school holidays and I am sure that they are very busy at the moment. Cern-yr-Ewr is the name of the sanctuary in Wales. Good luck please let us know what happens:)

Many thanks. We have just sent an email to the welsh monkey sanctuary.
We will keep you informed on our progress.

Stichting AAP ( Stichting AAP - Home ) in the Netherlands needs a mention, they'll pick him up and/or arrange a decent home. Mail to " info AT aap.nl" for more information.

Can't stress enough how people should never buy a lone/any marmoset though...

It seems that Mico will probably come to us to join one of our bachelor groups, made up of ex-pet Marmosets.

Thanks for everyones help

Matt

Big thankyou

Hi all,
many thanks for all of your help and advice. We were so worried about finding a new home for Mico and we had no idea on where to go.
Initially we started with the obvious choice of MONKEY WORLD but we got no replies to our emails requesting for help or advice. The only time we got a reply was when we sent an email telling them how poor we thought it was that they could not find the time to reply. There reply was not a pleasant one and there help was not available.

On the other hand thanks to this forum we were led in the direction of Matt from Specialist wildlife Re-homing. Could not of been any more helpfull if he tried. His advice and recommendations were very clear and very helpfull. Thanks to Matt, Mico will hopefully be rehoused with an all male marmosete group in a new project in Bristol (Biome).

Many thanks once again to everyone for all of your help and advice.

Glad to hear things have worked out for little Mico :) I hope he enjoys his new life.

Monkey world rarely reply to emails, glad to hear you have found him a home now :)

This is at least the third time I've heard of this scenario, i.e. person looking for help (through changed circumstances, rather than negligent keeping) and getting no assistance from Monkey World.

If one were cynical, one might think that they prefer the "big splash rescuing" from a bad situation (probably better for fund raising & TV) rather than helping responsible keepers with problems.

I know there's a possible argument that they've got limited resources but I can't imagine a Marmoset would strain them that much.

Monkey World have more than enough room for another marmoset, they take several in each year. I'm not sure why they don't respond, it would make sense for them to answer as soon as possible seeing as its their aim to rescue and re home primates.

Thing is NO BIG HEADLINES when rescueing from people who can no longer keep them for what ever reason.

A great big thankyou to Matt at specialist wildlife services for finding our little Mico a new monkey companion. On day one he was sharing his bed with another ex-pet marmosete. Nice to know that there are places available for help and advice.

Also a big thankyou to the members of Zoochat for all of the contacts you put forward.

Best regards Simon, Linda and Lindsay.
