Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoo News 2014

Marwell seem to have the worst PR people ever working for them (amongst most of the other senior backroom staff) it seems.

Why some nerk can't get it into their thick skull that getting in an exciting new species, preferably a 'first' for the park, would draw in visitors much more than an overly expensive shop, café or animal house.

Maybe the trustees are all builders and that's how they get their dosh?

All that wasted space with a dwindling collection of ageing animals-I wouldn't trust this bunch to keep a cageful of budgies.

When you look at how well Longleat's collection has been built up by a new team after the dreadful mistakes in the past there, it shows what you can do to put somewhere back on track.

What has happened? A death or transfer?

Well, the cheetah was PTS, it had intestinal issues and was genuinely PTS.
When I say 'genuinely' it was sick and the outcome wasn't good, it wasn't eating and was ill. Sometimes, animals just disappear at Marwell and then you find out that they are PTS - they were find the day before! (sand cats)

I cannot fathom why you have taken a particular dislike to me considering, as I said above, I *like* Marwell! :p

I like you Tea Loving Dave, I think, here there has been a birth 1 youngster with the Amur Leopard, but as usual Marwell are keeping it quiet.

As an English teacher, I like this sentence very much! It's a perfect exemplification of why a semi-colon is sometimes required instead of a comma: does that "I think" qualify @okapis' comment about TLD (I think I like him), or his news of the leopard birth (he thinks there has been a birth, but he's not sure)? I think we should be told!

Excellent! Please let's have some more good news from 'up the road'!

Okapi news. Jabani male has arrived from Copenhagen Zoo,Isrio male has left for Dublin zoo.

What's the current female situation at Marwell? I'm assuming they will try to breed with the new male? Were any babies fathered by the male that's just left?

Marwell have 2.2. Okapi the new male that has come in will be paired with the new female that has come from London her mum being born at Marwell, not sure if the male sent to Dublin has fathered any young at Marwell.

Isiro fathered Jamar in Marwell. Jamar is now in Lissabon.

The female that came from London must be Daphne. Her mother Elila was born in Marwell.

But does anyone know the names of the other okapis in Marwell because from my inof there must be 2.4.

At the time of the last successful birth, about 5 years ago, i think they had 3.4, but of the females, one was old (mid 20s) & one the calf.

Species leaving Marwell Zoo

I know that Marwell’s takins are going to Sweden, the kudus to Colchester Zoo, and the serval to Scotland, but does anybody know where the bat-eared foxes will be sent to? Were any of these species still at Marwell Zoo in May? I am interested to know because I visited the zoo then and did not see any of them.

Any information about the Amur leopard cub/cubs and identity of the cheetah which died would be greatly appreciated. I know the cheetahs were called Suki and Juba and that the male Turkus died a few years ago. Marwell isn't having much luck with its cheetahs, is it? What are the future plans for the cheetahs now that only one is left - import some new breeding stock or get out of the species?

The Takins are still at Marwell, but will go at some stage,I think it was only a pair of Kudu went to Colchester not sure where the others went but they have now all gone,Yes am sure more cheetahs will come but with your name Hunting dogs would think they would look good in Cheetah area and again in the past were kept at front area.just one amur leopard cup not sure what sex, wont be out on view to public for about a month, the bat eared foxes are still there but will go again at some time for new red panda area.

The remaining Cheetah is Juba, and is now 9yrs old.
There is an action plan for the replacement of the cheetahs, and there will/possibly be a change of species to the North African Cheetah (held at collections; whipsnade and chester)

The little Amur cub's sex has not been released to the public yet, but watch this space;)
