2. male Cheetah arrive from Landau Zoo Germany, brothers born Oct 2012,pair Serval due from London Zoo,to go in old area nice to see species back as Marwell wanted to go out of,Amur leopard cub to make first public show monday.

Yes still one female, plus the two new males brothers, but one is twice as big as the other, and I dont think Marwell are going to breed cheetah just show, was talk of going out of cheetah for Lions but the enclosure would need changing.Cheetah males are by the way Jabal and Tawo.

Visited today for the first time in two years - Despite the recent species departures and the general criticism the park has received recently I was pleasantly surprised to see it relativly busy (despite the wet weather)

In animal news - The Servals from London arrived this afternoon, the Northern Cheetah brothers from Landau appeared to have settled well and were out in the paddock during the later part of the afternoon. A male Marabou Stork has also come from Vienna recently..

IMO - not terribly impressed by what has become the Dwarf Mongoose house and still feel Sand Cats would be a much better fit should they be able to source them again

Oh and guidebook fans - The 2014 Marwell guide has now sold out (don't know if they plan to reprint or not) they have also ran out of paper maps so any visitors who aren't familiar with the park are having to make do with an unlabeled map from the the July party in the park events or the standing maps dotted around the park...

They have not done maps for some time now, they say to much waste paper the guide book has been in short supply for some time now they may just print a few more for this year but like most zoos now will do a new guide book for next year I am sure it will be much the same.

Are the servals a permanent or temporary move?

Sand Cats seem hard to come by in British collections nowdays (only Exmoor and Bristol according to zooliste), would probably be difficult for them to source them.

As for maps, thats ridiculous for a zoo that large, a cheap black and white map would be better than nothing.

Marwell stopped doing maps this year, said to much waste paper to pick up as so many were thrown away. They have put new boards up and new signposts,to be fair in the main people dont seem to moan much ,As I understand Marwell did intend to stop keeping Serval and intended to turn area in aviary but did not happen and as London seems to want a home for there Serval its good far better than an empty area.Sand Cats like so many species seem to do the rounds so to speak and then they go out of fashion as I understand its not a species Marwell will go back to.

It's a shame London couldn't have found a new home in the zoo for their serval, I guess they thought the massive carnivore collection left would be sufficient!!
Good news that the servals haven't joined Marwell's vanished species list though!

Made a brief visit today on route elsewhere.
Dinosaur leaflets were being given out inside the gate- obviously I didn't take one, but these do contain the usual map of the zoo, as I saw several people studying them!
I didn't get to see the leopard cub, my main reason for visiting(even more so now the 2014 challenge is as good as over). Apart from the Arabian Oryx & pygmy hippo calves, I can't think of many positives really, except to say at least the serval, takin & bat eared Fox haven't gone... Yet!
I went to Howletts yesterday, a much more positive experience!

New cheetahs and servals

Lovely to know that 2 new cheetahs and a pair of servals have arrived at Marwell now. Does anybody know the names and ages of the servals? And what was the cause of the okapi calf's sudden death?

Dont know of names of Servals, the okapi died overnight and was found dead I am sure they will do a postmortem, its sad as I saw it walking round and feeding from his mum lets hope the new young pair will breed in the future.

It's a bit rediculous that having paid good money to get into a zoo you then have to buy a guidebook in order to get a map of the zoo. All zoos should provide a, preferably colour, map as part of the entrance fee.

Beats my recent experience at London; when I asked for a map on entry I was told I had to buy one of the £7 guidebooks (quite a price hike from last time I went!) in order to get a map...... and then when I did indeed buy the guidebook I found that as well as the map built into the guidebook, there was a leaflet-format map slotted into the guide, which I saw being handed out for free elsewhere in the zoo.

Having to buy a guidebook to get a map is still better than being *told* one has to buy a guidebook to get a map when this is not true.

Marwell ran out of guide books last week.have sold more than last year already maybe that has to do with no free maps anymore.

Are they not giving out the dinosaur maps now then(as my post last week states)?
