What does curiouse me is the kudu and bongo ...

Is there anything preventing potential hybridisation? Both are from the same genus and from what I see the bongo have access to the kudu field which has a male kudu inside.

I think they rotate which species had access to the field, so when the bongo have the field the kudu will be restricted to their house and smaller paddock, and vice-versa.

The Lesser Kudu and female Bongo do mix in the paddock, the male Lesser Kudu is a non breeding animal he and the two female Lesser Kudu are closely related, the last birth was five years ago, which is why I have made the point before they need to bring new animals in or they will go from Marwell.

You’re right that Marwell could definitely benefit from more lesser kudu. Perhaps they’re waiting to bring in a certain individual? What’s the situation with lesser kudu in Europe at the minute?

There are a number of zoos in Europe that hold Lesser Kudu, but I think with the problems of paperwork cost and also blue Tongue, its not going to happen, and species like Lesser Kudu will go from Marwell and the UK.

Dvur Kralove keeps around 50 lesser kudu. But bluetongue outbreak detected in Czechia few days ago (250km away from Dvur) might make any export attempt more than complicated.

Marwell Zoo is thrilled to announce an incredibly rare new arrival in the form of a Critically Endangered mountain bongo calf.

Born on September 4, the male baby bongo has already impressed keepers with his feistiness.

Marwell has welcomed a flurry of new arrivals over the last few weeks including a male Rothschild’s giraffe, female zebra foal, who has been named Yahna, and a tiny sitatunga born this week.

I presume the sitatunga would have been after I visited on Monday. I didn't see any evidence of young.

Addax born from the one female at Marwell, lets hope its a female as the last three have been males.
Seems incredible to think at some point Marwell Zoo was synonimus with desert antelope ex situ conservation breeding. I hope they will claw back some of their past glory and claim a more prominent role in exhibiting and breeding meaningfully large herds of desert antelopes.

NOTE: Yes it is a form of positive criticism / feedback on my part. I know what role they have in in situ work, I just hope it is replicated by a refocussed and inspired animal management and curatorial guardianship/ambassador role.
