Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoo News 2024

I just checked Ther males is Oliver & The female Is Zalika
Marwell used to have the pairing Oliver (b. 2011) and Wendy (b. 1995). At the time, they also had another oldie in Nato (born Barcelona in 1979). Wonder when both their 2013 (Gloria - Edinburgh?) and 2016 (Norbert - Pairi Daizi?) calves where transferred out.

We welcomed an adorable addax calf at Marwell Zoo on Friday 13 September.

Zoe Newnham, senior animal keeper, Hoofstock, said: “The new addax calf was born to mum Amelie and dad Tamerisk and is their fourth calf together.

“He is doing really well and is very confident and inquisitive, and a great addition to our herd here at Marwell.

“The conservation of addax is especially important as the species is listed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, with only 30 -90 mature individuals left in the wild.

“Marwell works with addax both in the wild, and here at the zoo by being part of the EAZA Ex-situ Species Programme (EEP) , which our calf is now the newest member of!”

Yes. For oldies like me they are comparatively new but used everywhere nowadays.
What I was more confused by was how they phrased one about Przewalski's Horses ... that they welcomed several of them ... it took me longer than I should have to figure out that the horses were born at Marwell.

In zoos 'welcomed'' seems to be used for both arrivals and births nowadays.

Just announced

Introducing.... Mbonisi

The newest member of the giraffe herd has now been named! Born just a few weeks ago, Mbonisi's name means 'one who leads', which keepers say is fitting for his determined spirit.

Thank you to everyone who suggested names, we really appreciate you reaching out.

We're currently fundraising for our giraffe herd. If you'd like to support us, please donate here: bit.ly/3ZhRjqd

Even more confusing to people of my vintage are other buzz words and phrases - "impacted", "reaching out", "passed over the rainbow bridge" etc. And don't get me started on text message abbreviated words!

We could almost have a thread on this topic.

Visitors have somehow become 'guests', and 'enrichment' is needed at every turn because it seems to have been accepted that the normal daily lives of animals have somehow become impoverished, when the opposite is actually the case.

Visitors became guests in many zoos and attractions before staff realised that they defo didn’t behave how you’d wish your guests to behave and so quickly became visitors again!

I think that one is perhaps an unwanted 'Americanism.?'
I personally didn't need blueberries or pumpkins either, but then I am an old f**t:rolleyes:

There used to be Americanisms I think ... but now with the internet some of America's ways of talking about things overly carefully have merely become global terms

A new companion for Tashi

Tashi welcomed a new friend on Friday following the arrival of a female red panda called Cherry who will share our red panda habitat with him once she’s settled in.

Cherry is seven years old and arrived at Marwell from Manor Wildlife Park in Wales. She will be in pod 1, closest to the walkthrough aviary while she gets used to her new surroundings.

Tashi will have access to pods 2 and 3 until our keepers decide they’re ready to be mixed and then they will both have access to the whole habitat.

Excellent news, how long is it since they have had more than one red panda?

Notes from a visit today.

  • The two red pandas, Cherry and Tashi have now been mixed. I saw both and they were both in pod 2. I take it the introduction has gone well. The arrival of Cherry seems to be an attraction as there were more people than normal around their exhibit.
  • Some recent new arrivals that are on the noticeboard that haven't been announced yet. It doesn't state where they have come from.
    • A female roan antelope.
    • A female collared partridge.
  • Work is being done on the cotton topped tamarin enclosure in Life Among the Trees. A lot of stones were being brought into the enclosure. I don't know if it is just for enrichment or if they are going to build something with them.
  • It appears that work on the white clawed crayfish breeding centre has only just started. The doors were open and it was empty. There were piles of building supplies outside.
  • The plants are covering more space in Thriving Through Nature. There are a lot more hiding places than there used to be.
  • The pond in the walkthrough aviary between the wallaby walkthrough and Cold Blooded Corner was being relined.
I did also listen to the podcast that was mentioned on Marwell's facebook page. The So So Show, which is a Southampton based podcast did an episode about Marwell. It includes interviews with several Marwell employees including Laura Reed. There aren't any major reveals. It is mentioned that Brexit is still causing major headaches with transferring animals to or from the continent. One thing it did say that I found odd, is that there are no trailers for transporting giraffes in the UK. Even for giraffe moves between UK collections a Dutch company is brought in to do it.

Great to hear that another roan has been brought, in, they were down to their last one I belive? Does this make it 1.1 or 0:2? Same with the Red Pandas of course, excellent news.

It's a shame that there are issues with giraffe transportation, it would be lovely to see the main field restocked. Its looking so hopeful got for Marwell.
