Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoological Park 2023

They are by nature fairly terrestrial animals, and spend most of their time on land even when provided with a pool. Marwell's approach of "field, with house" is all they really need - a heated indoor pool and plenty of room to trot about. I think the main success for Marwell has been the generally long-lives of the examples held if I'm remembering right. There's far more ornate exhibits (Berlin springs to mind) that are aesthetically nicer but were clearly built on the logic of pygmy hippos just being incredibly cold common hippos.

Sorry if it’s already been said but where did the hyrax come from and how many or were they already at the zoo?

Black & White Ruffed Lemur left the collection a few months ago to my knowledge. Excited to hear the Bush Dogs are arriving.

Off topic, but does anyone know the current species kept in Cold Blooded Corner and the Fur, Feathers & Scales aviary?

Cold blooded corner exhibits: Egyptian Tortoise, Gila monster, Vampire crab, green skink, casque headed iguana, Northern curly tailed lizard, Beaded lizard, Emerald tree monitor, roti Island snakeneck turtle, prehensile tailed skink, ball pythons and red legged millipede.

Aviary:
Madagascar teal
Collared hill partridge
Village weaver
White egret
Spotted laughingthrush
Black necked stilt
Fischer's touraco
Blue crowned laughingthrush
Northern bald ibis
Hamerkop

I believe that is it for the main aviary, but the UK'S only blue-faced honeyeater are on display in an aviary inside the wallaby walkthrough.

A neat document, complete with patchy, vectorised flamingoes, has been put onto Marwell's website detailing the arrivals and births Marwell has undertaken as of May 19th.
A nice thing to see on the website with a nice degree of openness. I look forward to seeing the same from other zoos of the UK.

On May 21st, the zoo announced that (0.0.2) red-tailed laughingthrushes hatched on May 15th. The zoo also announced they acquired (2.0) blue-crowned laughingthrushes from the Durrell Wildlife Trust in Jersey on April 26th and a (1.0) Goeldi's monkey from the Shaldon Wildlife Trust in Teignmouth on April 27th.

Is it too early to know when they will be on show?

Yeah according to Zoo Developments page the GLT, Pygmy Marmoset and Brazilian Guinea Pig enclosure is open. I'm presuming it is Life Among The Trees, although not sure where, possibly the one opposite Common Kusimanse indoor?

I recall actually that Wild Cavy were a species that used to be at Marwell - specifically from 2000 til 2006.

Does anyone recall where the wild cavy lived at the zoo during this time?

I have a couple of old maps I can upload which might show where they lived

More good news. Didn't expect it that quickly.

Which species are they mixed with?

They did say they would be mixed with pygmy marmosets and golden lion tamarins. If I recall correctly the pygmy marmosets were mixed with golden headed lion tamarins whilst the golden lion tamarins were mixed with the white faced sakis.

Have they actually been mixed with the pygmy marmosets and golden headed tamarins or has there been some re-organisation of Life Among the Trees?
