Melbourne haven’t had rhinos for a long long time (if they have at all).

They didn’t have any back in the 70’s, but not sure about before that.

Rhinoceros:

Melbourne Zoo have held rhinoceros before:

A two year old was imported in 1915. It was noted to be the first rhinoceros in Australia.

They received a five year old male named Peter in 1950 (donated by Sir Edward Hallstrom. He was captured in Tanganyika (Tanzania) and cost £4000.

Due to the price, rhinos weren’t common across our region’s zoos. Other species were cheaper; and expensive species like elephants at least had the potential to earn their keep.

Common hippopotamus:

Melbourne Zoo housed Common hippopotamus until 1982, when they were transferred to Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Their exhibit was next to the elephants (bottom right on this map):

No idea. I’m sure cassowary have come and gone according to the whims of curators and directors.

They have one female at the moment - Zillie. She can be viewed in the former Mandrill enclosure in the Gorilla Rainforest trail.

The last mandrill died back in 2017.

Zillie won't be getting any companions to my knowledge. They're usually a solitary species. There are also no cassowary at Werribee at the moment.

Werribee have a bachelor group of Giraffe, Melbourne have one male and two females; a young breeding pair and a middle aged female.
