Dear All

A fellow Bartlett Society (zoo history) member is co-authoring a publication about commemoration in relation to zoos and animal sanctuaries. He is interested in: -

a) memorials for keeping staff
b) memorials for animals that do not belong to the charismatic mega fauna
c) marked animal graves and or graveyards

We are not talking about busts of zoo founders and or statues of famous gorillas etc. but the more unusual and often more personal creations.

Any specific pointers and or possibly photographs would be great.

Regards, Paul M.

There are many benches at London Zoo with memorial plaques commemorating family members or friends; there is one bench, outside the Reptile House, that is rather unusual, though, as the plaque is in memory of a lion that lived in the Lion House more than seventy years ago.

The inscription reads:-

In Loving Memory of the Lion
"Jack"
who lived in the Lion House
22.VI.1923 - 8.IV.1938
From His Friend
B. Robertson

This isn't really out of the ordinary, but there is a tree planted for the first head gardener at Cotswold Wildlife park.
