Ty, the zoos 56 year old Female African Elephant was euthanized earlier today.

Oh no, that's incredibly sad news. She was the oldest African elephant in North America. She was 56 years old.

Ja Raffe – affectionately named after NBA Rookie of the Year and Memphis Grizzlies player Ja Morant – was born on November 10 to Niklas and Angela Kate.
His birth brings the herd to seven giraffes total.
Visitors to the zoo will be able to see him in his exhibit along with big sister Ally who is now 18 months old.

Our African penguin colony has two new chicks. The chicks were born to dad Cameron and mom Tulip.
One chick hatched before the new year on the December 29th, 2020. The second chick hatched on January 2nd. The pair are siblings to Casey, Kelso, Coretta and Lynn.
This birth brings the total number of penguins at the Zoo to 22. These two chicks are the 46th and 47th chicks to be hatched and reared at the Memphis Zoo.

All these new births are good news. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait to see them. The Memphis Zoo has gone back into lockdown, and is temporarily closed until further notice.

On March 4th, it was reported that the zoo will now be more sensorily inclusive with bags full of noise-canceling headphones, verbal cue cards, and badges letting staff know that the person might need more experience. Visitors will be able to use those bags for free.

Apparently it’s a seasonal exhibit and features 17 adult and 6 juvenile Red kangaroo.

The male fawn was born at the zoo on March 27 amid severe storms passing through the Mid-South. Due to his arrival in the midst of the wild weather, zoo staff gave the fawn the name Gale.
Gale, born to mother, Piper, and father, Freddie, is the second Pere David's Deer born at the zoo in the past two years.

Memphis Zoo are currently caring for 40 Mexican Box Turtles (Terrapene [carolina] mexicana) that were smuggled into the country. Once healthy, they will be sent to zoos that have experience with box turtles. A one and a half year old male okapi named Riley has moved to the zoo from Cincinnati, and is settling in well.

What happened to Memphis’s Bonteboks? They were there in January according to a YouTube video, but seem to have left since then.
In other news, Construction seems to have started on a new Egyptian-Themed exhibit where the old Hippo exhibit was.

I talked to some staff and they say it is going to be a splash pad.
Well that’s a major disappointment
. An Egyptian-themed exhibit would have been a pretty unique & exciting concert, while a splash pad is about as underwhelming as it gets.
