Memphis Zoo Memphis Zoo News

Politics aside, it is a shame how the tide has turned a bit when it comes to Pandas. I can’t help but feel because of their rarity they do bring a lot of uniqueness and charm to any zoo and I’m sure financially too (despite the fee).
Unfortunately the political situation is inextricable from the equation since the animals are government owned and any deals are with the government. If the Chinese government were more clear about the funds going directly to panda conservation then I think you would see a different feeling overall, but they are not at all clear how the money is spent.

They do bring a very cool and very unique animal to any zoo that has them, but the costs are very high. I think there was a time where the costs were mitigated by the public appeal, but I am wary if that is the case any longer. I don't know the actual financials of course, but between building a specialized habitat, fees from China, a very specialized diet, and other animal care factors, I doubt there is a large return on the investment. There is still a prestige factor to having them, that seems obvious though.

Really sucks that this whole situation completely stained Memphis Zoo's reputation with the public, possibly even permanently. Not only have they brought their little movement to Atlanta and Smithsonian's, but they've also changed targets to Memphis' polar bears now. Once again, it's always the people who know the least about zoos that have the most to say about them. At the same time though, I'm glad that's over with and wish Ya Ya safe travels back home.

I wouldn't worry about the Zoo or it's public perception. Its bad public perception from China, but like, who cares what they have to say. I seriously doubt any general Memphis Zoo visitor is aware of the negative press from Chinese media and online trolls. The city will continue to support the Zoo and general audiences will continue to enter the gates. Out of all the current/former Zoo's housing pandas, they were the least likely to be granted a new pair. It's a good time for the Zoo to close this chapter and move on.

I know a few keepers on that team who are quite relieved to be done with that program.

I think every Zoo has had its (often unfair) share of bad press from all sides, especially if they have a high publicity animal like a panda.

For example there’s been no talk of Edinburgh Zoo mistreating their pandas (who I’ve enjoyed visiting many times and known some of their keepers) by any of the Chinese outlets.

The ironic thing is the only bad publicity it did get was by some rather cynical (usually left wing) journalists who do come up with some rather strange stories, for example one journalist claimed the Zoo had “failed” as the pandas did not breed and that it’s cruel to put them on public display while this same journalist said recently that, if we return them to China they will be killed….

Obviously I’m not trying to compare Memphis and Edinburgh, but the point is most people simply forget , or ignore entirely journalists trying to cause a sensation for click bait. It’s only really people like us who discuss these things in depth.

While I did question (and still do) some of the Memphis keepers behaviours that I saw on the Panda cam, for the record I don’t believe that they were treated badly in Memphis, and in a way it is a shame that Ya Ya went back - but, people may disagree with me - I have no doubt that she will be well cared for in China too.

From what I’ve heard she will be in Shanghai for a month and then on to Beijing Zoo where she will be next to the famous Meng Lang panda.

Yeah I think it’s about time we phase out pandas from the US entirely. If it means being able to put those millions of dollars into other species then good riddance. So let’s hope Memphis follows in San Diego’s footsteps. Social media is where the zoo is being bombarded with negative comments the most even in posts that have nothing to do with Ya Ya and Le Le. I’m sure these will continue for a while but will hopefully die down sooner rather than later.

Come on, man - that's an insult to *trolls*.

At the very least National should keep them - Memphis and Atlanta can adapt and utilize other species (world's greatest walkthrough crane aviary/red panda habitats, or even something left-field like Sichuan takin or long-tailed goral). San Diego, the city still has panda merch even with the pandas being gone for ages, and National, well, it's National.

Two Sumatran tiger cubs were born on May 5th to first-time parents Gusti and Dari! These are the first tiger cubs to be born at Memphis in over 25 years.

Memphis Zoo on Instagram: "“We are thrilled to announce the birth of these two Sumatran tiger cubs – a critically endangered species. The symbol of the tiger is synonymous with pride and community here in Memphis, and I have no doubt the city will join us in the celebration of these significant births.” Courtney Janney, Chief Zoological Officer Dari, our female Sumatran tiger, gave birth to two cubs on the evening of May 5th, 2023. Dari is seven years old, and Gusti, our male tiger, is four. Sumatran tigers are one of the most critically endangered subspecies of tigers. The last time Memphis Zoo had tiger cubs was over 25 years ago, in April of 1998. Memphis Zoo has previously celebrated seven tiger cub births on grounds. The two Sumatran tigers born in 1998 were the first Sumatran tigers born at Memphis Zoo, and the mother of those cubs is Dari’s grandmother. At one time, there were nine subspecies of tigers on the planet, and that number is now down to six due to habitat loss and poaching. The Sumatran tiger is in dire need of assistance. Memphis Zoo is honored to play a part in increasing the Sumatran tiger population in zoos at such a pivotal point in their conservation story. Dan Dembiec, West Zone Curator, states, “As the last of the island tigers, preserving Sumatran tigers is critically important. Sumatran tigers are managed collaboratively in breeding programs by accredited zoos globally. So, the birth of tiger cubs here at the Memphis Zoo is a milestone with a worldwide impact.” Stay Tuned because we have more tiger content to share with you throughout the day! It's a Tiger Takeover! #memphiszoo #tigertakeover #tigercubs #sumatrantigers"

The zoo obtained four new tundra wolves. The article and the zoo's post on instagram/facebook do not say where though. The zoo responded to an Instagram comment saying their only adult wolf, Meeka, will spend the rest of her days behind the scenes but will still get first dibs on the exhibit. She is 14 years old and the zoo has no plans on introducing her to the cubs.

Are they realy turukhan wolves?

Visited the zoo today and wanted to make a note on what's happening with the former panda areas. The outdoor area holds a pair of unsigned geese. Le Le's former indoor area has been converted and holds the male refulgens red panda. Ya Ya's old day room is still being worked on but will hold the mom and twin red pandas born earlier this year. They will still keep their old outside area behind/next to the francois langurs exhibit.

On other news, the aviary is closed for maintenance/repainting.
