Memphis Zoo Memphis Zoo News

sounds like they're trying really hard to fund raise to complete Zambezi hippo camp. They'll be able to bring in a lot of revenue with the elephant calf this August. I hope things go better this time around than they did in 2009

Fund raising on Zambezi Hippo Camp is 80% complete and the zoo intends to begin construction in January 2013.The exhibit plans look very cool and are to include hippos.nile crocs, greater flamingo, okapi and possibly and new primate species. The exhibit is to be located where the dinosaur trek is currently set up and into the current croc/flamingo exhibits. There is no word on what is to become of the old hippo house considering its kind of a historic exhibit at the zoo.The Hippo House was built in 1916 and renovated in 1955.The outdoor pools are from the original 1916 building. The zoo has a long history with hippos and its great to see them as the focus of a major project. They seem to be getting the shaft at some zoos these days when it comes to new enclosures.

The Memphis Zoos original 10 yr Giant Panda contract with the Chinese Government is set to expire next year.Negotiations are under way on a extension. If Ya Ya were to produce a cub this year which she has yet to do during her stay in Memphis then the trio would stay another 5 years at the zoo.Otherwise its likely the zoo would keep its male Le Le and receive another female.

About the Memphis Zoo North Island Brown Kiwis
Only seven zoos in the United States house the birds. Memphis Zoo has housed kiwis off and on since 1991, when a female Brown Kiwi was received on loan from the San Diego Zoo to celebrate the annual Memphis in May festival (when New Zealand was the featured country). The Memphis Zoo imported four kiwis in the fall of 1991 from zoos in New Zealand. A male from the Auckland Zoo was kept at the Memphis Zoo, and the other three were sent to other zoos across the U.S. Memphis’ original kiwis were housed in the Kenyan building. This is now the Dragon’s Lair exhibit, which houses Komodo dragons. In 1995, our remaining male kiwi was sent to the San Diego Zoo on a breeding loan.

Justus, Aria’s half-uncle, was hatched in Frankfurt, Germany. Both Aria and Justus are on loan to the Memphis Zoo from the Frankfurt Zoo. Kiwis are unlike any other bird; they have several mammal-like features, including marrow-filled bones, two functioning ovaries and a low body temperature. They are native to New Zealand, and are known as the “panda of the bird world.” The small, flightless birds are nocturnal, and live in pairs in the wild. These pair bonds can be long-lasting, with some having been recorded of 20+ years.

What a bargain - it used to cost a million dollars a year. Pandas are now half price? At this rate, they will be giving them away soon! ;)

Of all the Zoos I've been to its in my top three with Bronx (which I went to when I was 11 so its mostly picture aided memory) and North Carolina.

Possibly your namesake? I've always felt they are a good downgrade species for an old hippo exhibit. I wish Birmingham would send Tadpole to Memphis and that would give the Rhinos even more room.

To update Zambezi Hippo Camp, construction has been pushed back to fall 2013 and the new primate as been revealed to be mandrills.
