Memphis Zoo Memphis Zoo News

With the limited number of Hippos in AZA Zoo's and the plan for this to be a large herd, I wonder if Tadpole from Birmingham eventually ends up there when this new project is finished. After all his exhibit at Birmingham is substandard, you can barely see him, and it would be better off to give the Rhino trio even more space.

According to the Memphis Zoo they plan to break ground on Zambezi River Hippo Camp in the fall of 2013.The project has been delayed several times.

Was Ya Ya, the giant panda artificially inseminated this year? Is there a good chance she may finally have a baby? I know the Smithsonian National Zoo almost has one last chance before they switch up their pair, will this happen at Memphis as well? It's unfortunate they are the only US zoo with pandas to never have a cub.

We are surprised that a change in pandas has not already occured.

- It would be really sad for the national zoo to send away there pandas. They have had them for so long and they are famous. The zoo does have 4 panda yards so they could keep the current pair along with a new pair if they wanted.

I am trying to get an accurate count of how many bonobos are in captivity in the United States. Does anyone know how many are at the Memphis Zoo? Name and ages would be helpful also.

I feel the same way Blopsz. Memphis zoo should move on from the Pandas. I was actually thinking Oakland Zoo should have received this pair or bring in a new pair to see if they were able to breed since they did build a exhibit for pandas.
