Edinburgh Zoo Mercedes Replacement

No worry and thank you.

The ONLY Polar Bear in Britain?!? What a shame. It seems to me that there are Zoos in GB who have the money and the space to built a good exhibit for this animals (so e.g. the french does in Peaugres, Amnéville and La Flèche and the germans in Gelsenkirchen and soon in Hannover and Munich - would you British let you really want to leave you behind from them:))

I'm entirely in agreement - unfortunately captive polar bears fell very swiftly out of fashion in the UK in the late 80s/early 90s and no-one has yet tried to reverse this (though it looks as if Highland are having a go).

A lot of the time people are told what is happening in confidence - if the zoo doesn't want you to release the information most on here would respect that. However, it's human nature to want to give out as much as you can without breaking that trust; hence the posts along the lines of 'it's a new species to the collection' and so on.

There have been several threads around here lately that have just been painful to read - I wouldn't single out the guessing-game ones, which at least generally avoid name-calling!

Totally agree with this comment maguari

My feeling is most of the Urban zoos in the UK won't dare to poke their heads over the parapet on this issue- many haven't really got the space and even if they planned/advertised a multimillion £ new enclosure I'm sure they would be fearful of the AntiZoo lobby's immediate focus on them again.

No Amur leopard at the park, and as of yet no suitable enclosure for them either, all works seem to have been concentrated on the camel house and the new polar bear enclosure, perhaps this is next on the list along with the intended snow leopards.

I look forward to seeing what sort of onnovative enclosure they come up with for these most agile of cats! what is the lynx enclosure like up there?

Are there plans to move Edinburgh's wolverines there? They do fit the collection plan after all.

This is the official response from the RZSS, regarding Mercedes replacement.

We are hoping to bring a new species to Edinburgh Zoo to fill Mercedes new enclosure. The enclosure will first need to be modified, and we would therefore expect to be ready for a new species early summer 2010. Keep your eyes to the ground for more news on what new species we will be getting!

Sadly, sworn to secrecy, ontop of which, being Edinburgh Zoo plans could change (and often do!)

What I will say , the fund raising team won an award from the Institute of Fundraisers Scotland for the work they done for Mercedes enclosure at HWP!

Hello! I've just registered so hope you don't mind me joining in? I can't say what the species is that will be going into the polar bear enclosure but I can say that it definately will not be a primate species - unfortunately!!!

Big new bear would be good!
If im reading right and that the wild cat enclusure is now closed to be referbed with a tie into Mercedes old habitat, then that may end up being a rather large area created.
