And what then would be the point of moving the big old bear to HWP? I fail to see how anyone could view it as a good idea (or even acceptable) to put more large ursids into that tiny exhibit

I also heard Sun Bear. Since then however, I have heard differently. Whether or not that's Edinburgh Zoo keeping everyone on the edge of their seat or other rumours that are spreading, I don't know.

Wasn't one of the main reasons for the move down to the climate, Aviemore is a fair bit cooler then Edinburgh.
And if they are doing a heavy upgrade between two exibits to make one large one, it may well be fine for a large animal again. (Since I never said I wanted to see a Bear in the old habitat, but the new combined one could well be suitable)
Which is not something they could have done with Mercedes there, unless they had a suitable point in the zoo to move her to.
Would there be a more suited animal?
If the area was extended and lots of climbing equipment added, I can imagine Sun Bears being a good fit. However, they are the smallest of the ursids, "large bear" conjures up images of either polars or grizzlies and, even with the extension mentioned, I don't think the exhibit would be large enough for either species.
There are going to be a few moves around the zoo, to accomodate animals currently held in the aviaries at the rear of the old polar bear enclosure, whilst work is carried out on the enclosure.
* The pair of red-fronted macaws, along with 3 ocellated turkey and a pair of Azara’s agouti will join the thick-billed parrots in their enclosure, next to the monkey house.
* The pair of argus pheasants will move to the aviaries behind the Rhino house, and in turn the family of Cochin Chinese red jungle fowl will move from those aviaries to Rainbow Landings.
* The swamp wallabies will be moved from their enclosure opposite the Darwin’s Rhea near the front of the zoo to the enclosure opposite (the now infamous!) Barbary Rock.
* And finally, the pair of kookaburra will unfortunately have to move off-show for the duration of the works.
Why the swamp wallabies are moving is a mystery to me, as their enclosure is nowhere near the polar bear enclosure, unless the zoo is carrying out work on the sea lion enclosure, but that is just me speculating.

Also they are moving closer to Mercedes old enclosure as they are moving to the enclosure that the agoutis are moving out of. I have to say I feel sorry for the jungle fowl, and the staff in Rainbow Landings. That is going to be one extremely noisy building!

As a volunteer at the zoo I have learnt that nothing is definite until it is in place. That is one of the things that makes Edinburgh Zoo such an exciting zoo, so much can change in totally unusual and unexpected ways. Until it is announced or definite either as a press release, on the website or as part of a public talk (i.e. a talk at the zoo that is charged for) it can only be seen as a rumour, regardless of who has said what.
There can be a lot of speculation as to what moay or may not be coming to the zoo. Other than the 11 chimps at the moment nothing is definite and there is a lot of paperwork and red tape involved with any animals move. Transoport has to be arranged, vet checks, genetic history and background and a whole lot of other stuff has to be dealt with. Until whatever is going in that space that around the old polar bear enclosure is on its way then we should all just wait and see!
