Edinburgh Zoo Mercedes Replacement

Was at the zoo today and there is small signs saying Sun Bears coming soon the wildcat enclosure has been taken down and wildcats have been moved to the end avaries that used to house the Macaws and Serima.

Does anyone have any idea of the time scale involved here?
How long is work expected to be carried out?
When are the bears expected in Edinburgh?
When will the new enclosure be open to the public?

2010 is shaping up to be an interesting and exciting year for new animal species at a variety of zoos up and down the UK.

Hi was speaking to a member of staff and was told they have a 3 month time scale to get the bear enclosure ready which makes completion around easter time whether that happens remains to be seen but was impressed what has been done so far no idea on a date of arrival for the bears will keep you posted if I hear anything.

Apart from the bears any other interesting animals due to arrive in Edinburgh this year!!!!!!

Thats great!!!!:D

Means there will be new animals for me to see on my visit in the summer.:D:cool:

Was at the zoo today and the new enlosure seems to be coming alone well... they have taken away the wildcat enclosure and some of the avairies... it also look as if they are extending down towards the chimps alittle... looks like a huge area in total... cannot wait for it to be ready :)

bring on the sunbears!!

Pics please :D

Dammit. Ah well, I'm sure someone will provide them eventually :)

Theres not much to see just now, just lots of dirt. Will post some pics when it starts to develop more.

Suppose they have to show they can look after the species before getting a female if it ever happens and be part of the captive breeding programme!!

Also coupled with the fact that males are desperately needed in the European breeding program.

I am interested to lnow what is going into the south east Asia aviaries that will accompany the new sun bear enclosure, i am quite sure the argus pheasant pair will be one species.

Oh i didn know males were needed in the european collection just feel sometimes Edinburgh is a holding zoo for bachelor groups like the dik dik koalas hog deer and rhinos and i understand these are just imporatant to the breeding programme.

Kiang i hope in the avaries there will be some unusual bird species from the region of the sun bears and i would be happy to see the pheasants there are they are such a beautiful bird :)

interested to see the plans for the new enclosure, hopefully know more at the Members update at end of March

looks like they have removed the front wall and broken in to the grassy hillside? as far as Im aware the house for the bears will be at the top where the avaries were

Have panda been ruled out now at Edinburgh? or could this be a panda exhibit/ sunbear quarantine. If males are required elsewhere perhaps these guys will move on leaving the exhibit for their endangered piebald cousins??? Just a thought!

My understanding is that pandas haven't been ruled out and that the sun bear enclosure is a separate development.

I think the area of the planned giant panda exhibit is the woodland just above the bongo/red river hog paddock.

Was at the zoo today and they were moving in some big trees with a crane, still can't work out what it will look like.
