Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo News 2019

Not sure if this has been posted yet but the Kenyan Guinea Fowl are out in the African Forest exhibit now, I saw one for the first time today. Also the African spurred tortoises are living in the South America yard now.
The baby camel is a male named Jethro born on June 7. The wattled curassow from the primate building was shipped to another zoo for breeding, hence why he's been missing for the past months
Jealous I was there this morning and I didn’t see them, Kenyan Guinea Fowl, out.

Another update I forgot to mention earlier: the construction fencing is up around the hippo exhibit. The gates were still open today so guests could walk through, but the area blocked off stretches from the end of the former bongo exhibit, all the way to giraffes/the old elephant side of the pachyderm mall.
As far as actual construction goes, I have two theories. Either construction won't start until after Zoo A la Carte, or (and preferably) it will start very soon but be on hold during A la Carte and the gates will be opened again for foot-traffic. I just feel like during the zoo's busiest time, they won't want to block off a huge chunk of pathway and create dead-ends.

The construction fences have closed! Construction of the new hippo exhibit has begun! It appears as though the red river hogs (my personal favorites) will be off exhibit until further notice, which is a little saddening. But work has begun, how exciting! The hippos will live in the old elephant exhibit now; probably the reason that one of the old elephant stalls has been covered up.

I feel like the hippos will be moving around that building a lot because they have to dig down into the basement of that building to build the water filtration. I think the cover up is more for the public not to see that area torn up, but we will see.

Glad they are moving on to the new hippo and then finally the new rhino exhibit fairly close on finishing up the elephant exhibit development.

As an aside: In terms of tapir what is the current set up?

The master plan is doing construction on the hippos then the rhinos which apparently should also take up the former mayalan tapir and Asian bear exhibit behind the camels. The zoo is also home to a new Baird’s tapir which is hopefully here to breed with a pair which is hopefully transferring to the zoo very soon
How long ago did we have the Asian bear?

I believe the zoo is finding another breeding pair for tapirs. And also the bear exhibit is just fully grown over with weeds and plants. Hopefully rhino construction involves work with that exhibit.

Honestly I'd be a little surprised if we got a new pair of Malayan tapirs, considering the semi-near work on the rhinos exhibits. That and the zoo's last malayan tapir passed away over a year ago? (not 100% on when she passed) and the exhibit isn't by any means large. Is the new pair Baird tapirs going in the South America yard?

They are getting a breeding pair of Baird’s tapirs... sorry if I wasn’t clear on that!

I believe that we received males, from what the press release and keepers told me. However that could of changed but from what I’ve been told we have two male foals and the two females still reside in the water hole exhibit.
Did you hear if we will receive females for the new exhibit? If we will be breeding zebras in the future?

As of right now, I’ve heard nothing. Although with the rhinos exhibit being remodeled in the near future, there could be potential. I’ve heard that they are restarting the greater kudu breeding program, also they are wanting to start up a breeding program for the bongo’s. So a male be coming their but that’s about it.
