Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo news 2021

I visited the zoo today for the first time in over 2 years. Here's a complete list of changes since that visit. Some of these have been reported on previously but most I don't think have been mentioned (I'm also not going to mention some obvious ones like Hippo Haven and animals moving to Adventure Africa):

-The Whooping Crane exhibit is open again (and they have a chick).
-Lots of minor changes in the aviary (species switching habitats, ect) but the biggest changes are the loss of 4 species (Laughing Kookaburra, White-faced Whistling-Duck, Blue-faced Honeyeater, Scarlet Ibis) and the gain of 2 species (Spangled Cotinga, Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat).
-The adult chicken exhibit near the south entrance to the farm is now empty.
-The old Barred Owl exhibit is now home to a North American Porcupine.
-The previously empty exhibit adjacent to that exhibit is now home to a Domestic Cat.
-The previously empty exhibit to the right of the old squirrel exhibit is now home to a Domestic Rabbit.
-The previously empty exhibit to the left of the old squirrel exhibit is now home to a Groundhog.
-The Domestic Duck exhibit is now empty.
-There are now two Black Crowned Cranes on the African Savannah.
-The prairie dogs are now gone. The future of this species in Wisconsin is looking bleak.
-The Sandhill Crane is gone.
-Small Mammals is looking emptier than ever now with the night monkey, Ring-tailed Lemurs, Golden Lion Tamarins, Common Dwarf Mongooses, and Fennec Foxes now all gone. And that's even with the addition of Prehensile-tailed Porcupine.
-The Moon Jellys have been replaced with a cuttlefish! What a cool animal!
-The Kelp Forest tank is undergoing some sort of renovation. Currently only the Striped Surfperch and one other species I didn't recognize.
-The smaller Kelp Forest tank now has Striped Surfperch, as well. I couldn't find the chiton or the sculpin in there, they might be gone.
-The anaconda has been replaced by a Red-tailed Boa.
-The snake exhibit adjacent to the alligators is now christened "Snakes of Indonesia". Halmehera Python and Red-tailed Green Ratsnake have replaced the Amazon Tree Boa and Brazillian Rainbow Boa, with the Green Tree Python remaining in the exhibit.
-The Common Suriname Toad is gone and has been replaced with a Clouded Archerfish and several Green Spotted Pufferfish.
-As mentioned before the piranhas have moved to the Madagascar tank. The old piranha tank is now home to Amazon Milk Frogs.
-The Prehensile-tailed Skink has been replaced by a False Water Cobra.
-The Chacoan Horned Frog has been replaced by a Brazilian Black Tarantula.

Also, some births (I don't these ones have been mentioned yet, but I could be wrong):
-A Japanese Macaque was born.
-A Whooping Crane was born.
-A Prehensile-tailed Porcupine was born.
-Two bushbabies were born.
-A camel was born.

Spangled continga is a great addition. I wonder what other zoos currently have them. I first saw the species at Denver but they have since closed there bird house.

I was there on June 23 and there was an anaconda in the exhibit with the red-tailed boa.

Did you see the new gorillas?
There was no anaconda signed. I couldn't actually see into the exhibit (the glass was all fogged up). I saw a vaguely boa-colored blob that I assume was the boa, but that might not even have been the case. So the anaconda might be there.

I saw gorillas but no idea if they are the new ones. I couldn't recognize the old gorillas, so I wouldn't be able to tell anyways.

I also just realized that there was third species added to the aviary I forgot to mention - a Violaceous Euphonia.

How many gorillas did you see

Sad about the Prairie Dogs, wonder if a new animal will take their spot or if the exhibit will be phased out of the zoo for the future exhibits in the master plan

In the current master plan, the prairie dog exhibit is converted into a "Bear Garden" (beer garden) as part of the Alaska Cold Coast exhibit, which is allegedly the next major project after the new rhino exhibit is done.

It’s that time of year again, Milwaukee County has released what capital projects are on deck to possibly getting approved and the timeline that they hope to follow.
