Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo news 2021

The zoo has removed all information regarding black rhinos. There’s still some information on rhinos and the difference between the species posted though. They have moved the South American tortoises into the former indoor enclosure of the black rhino.

Are they Red-Footed Tortoises? I'm trying to recall what species of South American tortoises Milwaukee has and where they were located previously in the zoo. (I don't think I remember them having tortoises in the Reptile Building?)

Yeah they are the red footed tortoises.

I’m not sure where theses all have been at the zoo this past year. I feel like they have moved tortoises from the South American yard to the Bongo Yard and now to former rhino indoor exhibit. Not sure if it’s the same tortoises that have moved to all these locations or not, does anyone recall if it was?

I thought it was mix of Red-footed and Yellow-footed? Or are the Yellow-footed all gone now?

Now that you mention it, I definitely remember seeing them in the Bongo exhibit.

Just after the arrival of the 2 new cheetahs, Imara has passed away:

On the tortoises discussion, I vaguely remember seeing red-footed and yellow-footed torts in South America, as well as Yellow-footed in the front "moat" of the camel yard? That memory could be from a couple years ago though. I wouldn't be surprised if the red-footed tortoises in the former rhino indoor area are the ones from the South America yard. That way the zoo can continue to display the species in the winter months, while saving space down below i the winter quarters, with the added bonus of having something on that side of the pachyderm mall rather than having it be totally empty.

Exciting news from the zoo's website:
"Primates of the World will open to visitors Dec. 13, as most of the primates have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (it is a specially formulated vaccine made specifically for animals.) The second doses of the vaccine for primates are being administered now and will be complete by Dec. 31."
After being closed for nearly 2 years, the Primates of the World building will re-open.

I'm so excited! I missed seeing all of the other primates!

We were just there for an early morning Stroller Safari with the kiddo and due to the crazy snow we had, we building-hopped our way to the Aquatic House – along the way they shuffled us through the just re-opened Primates of the World building.

Apes and monkeys alike seemed ecstatic that visitors were roaming the halls, both orangutans had their faces up to the glass, spider monkeys were maniacal with energy – all but the lone siamang who had just lost her mate were active and interested.

It's a shame to hear about the passing of their male siamang. She's also prehistoric, so I'm curious to see if they will try to introduce her to another male, or if they will allow her to live solitarily until she passes away.
