When did Minnesota Zoo stop exhibiting Asian small-clawed otters? Weren't those one of the signature species for the Tropical Trail since it was opened almost 50 years ago?

They were phased out for unknown reasons last year. I don’t think a permanent replacement has been found yet, but I have my guesses. And yes, they were the headliner species when the Tropics Trail first opens in ‘78.

Four African magpie shrikes flew out of Tropics Trail back in July. One has been returned, and the other three are still at large.

Tropical birds escape from Minnesota Zoo
That explains why all of the non-waterfowl free-flying birds weren’t out and about on my last visit. I do hope they can find the rest of the Shrikes, I don’t really want another Gladys situation on our hands.

On August 25th, the zoo announced that (0.0.12+) wood turtles were hatched in the month of August.

Glad to know they still have this species!

On September 2nd, the zoo announced they have released 2,700 freshwater mussels (species(s) not specified) into the Mississippi River in July.

I would assume some of these would be the species they display on-exhibit, those being Mucket, Fatmucket, and Higgin's Eye.

The Minnesota Zoo announced the arrival of a male Amur Leopard, named Valeri, to join the two female Amur leopards currently at the zoo.It seems as though he's been around for a few days on exhibit already given the wording on the post.

EDIT: Can't seem to figure out how to make it just a text link. (I thought clicking the unlink button in the comment would make that the case. It just seems to be getting converted into video. Maybe the server didn't update things yet on my end.)

Updates from today's visit.

. Common Carp have moved into the old Salmon tank in Russia's Grizzly Coast.

. The prairie dogs have temporarily moved out of their exhibit due to ongoing construction of the Treetops Trail.

. The male Burmese Brown Tortoise has moved back into the old Asian Small Clawed Otter Exhibit.

. A new animatronic dinosaur exhibit () has been opened behind in-between the Tropics Trail and the East Entrance, known as Dino Dugout.

Dolphins returning to Minnesota Zoo! Brookfield’s dolphins temporarily at Minnesota Zoo while habitat is renovated:

Dolphins Return - Minnesota Zoo
Now I did NOT expect this! I better make plans to visit to the zoo before they leave!
Cool, but annoying for anyone who wants to see monk seals.
Ola should still be visible from the behind the scenes tanks behind the main exhibit, although It wouldn’t be the greatest view:(.
