Mixed species exhibit ideas

While I think that the deers and the gazelles would go along, equines can be aggressive toward hoofstock smaller than them
If the enclosure is large enough, this mix could work (like the numerous African plains with Zebras or Wild Asses, Antelopes and other species).
The Onagers must be separated from the other ungulates in the night quarters, they must also have separated paddocks.

Can river hippos be mixed with anything besides African cichlids?

Most birds (including storks such as marabous. As well as vultures) and smaller gazelle species such as nile lechwe. Though other animals such as river hogs or meerkats (given that they have a place to get away) would work

Well, well, well... ;) :p
Yes. In Beauval there are Common Hippos mixed with European Freshwater Fish (Carps, Pikes, Sturgeons...) and many birds (Ducks, Storks, Ibises, Pelicans, Vultures...). European fish have been chosen for climatic reasons because the pool is located outdoors.
Interesting to hear, in the US I see tilapia in the outdoor pools (I guess they warm the pools fro the fish)

I cannot see the interest of such an exhibit, assuming that an Hippo would never meet a Californian Sea Lion (nor any Sea Lion) in its natural habitat.
