Mixed species exhibits #2

Very interesting for the public, but not so great for the animals.

In the wild they can get away from each other, but in a zoo enclosure (even a big one) they must remain close to each other and bullying inevitably occurs.......

For mixed species exhibits to occur without strife, keepers must be "on the ball" and stop any trouble quickly.

And what about this picture of the african exhibit taken today at Prague zoo?

Sable antelope + Bongo + Beisa + Blesbok + Nile Lechwe + Secretary bird + Southern Ground Hornbill.
A little bit crazzy mix of species, but it works!

That's the greenest savannah that I have ever seen! It wouldn't look like that in Australia!

Photo's are working better...

I mentioned a bit earlier a mixed exhibit from Milwaukee Zoo (connecting with Bongos & Zebras). I read back, and I saw that this mixing not so appropriate, because at least in one event it occured that an Eland/Greater kudu hybrid was born (the hybrid involving a male Eland & female Kudu and it was born in San Diego WAP).

But there are many examples of hybrids as a result of creating mixed exhibits ...

At Monarto they have to take the Zebras out when the Eland have calves. In the past the Zebras bit off the Eland calves tails and at least one of their adult Eland have no tail due to this.

Few mixed exhibits with African great apes

There are lots of examples on this thread that Gorillas have been mixed with other primates species. One examples for a different combination with an ungulate species: Gorillas & Sitatungas had been mixed at Gulf Breeze Zoo (FL, USA)

Some mixing with Bonobos:
Bonobos & Patas monkeys & Rock hyraxes at Cincinnati Zoo (this exhibit was tested approx. in the middle of the nineties; the Patas monkeys had their own enclosure, but had access to the bonobos’ area)
Bonobos & Red river hogs at Columbus Zoo
Bonobos & European rabbits at Zoologischer Garten Köln (I don’t know the exact date)

Chimpanzees & Gelada baboons at Los Angeles Zoo (it was exist for some years in the eighties, but without male Chimpanzees; there are some details about it f. e. in ’Wild mammals in captivity’)

And apart from the zoogeographical aspects:
Gorillas & Orangutans at Woodland Park Zoological Gardens (in the seventies)

Mixed exhibits with European otters

There was an unusual mixed exhibit at Salzburg Zoo with European otters. The otters were mixed with Alpine marmots and Chamois in a 1,5 hectare area. The mixing was not end very succesfully, because adult marmots have been killed by otters, and even one of the Chamois died after a bite in the nose (fish-toxins). So after this event the otters had been removed.
An other example (this might mention on the 'Random mixing experiments' thread): European otters, Red foxes, Raccoons and Striped skunks in the same 3500 square metres enclosure at St. Felicien Zoo (Quebec, CA). This mixing was created in 1995, but I don’t have information about how it was end or still exist or not. It was just mentioned that this combination is succesful and works very well.

So: Does anybody have knowledge about mixed exhibit with European otters which still exist? Or any experience connecting with this from the past?
What do You think all about mixed exhibits with Eurpean otters at all?

San Diego used to have European otters with Francois' langurs and giant flying squirrels. They no longer have this mix, no idea if it was successful or not, but they no longer have European otters in the collection.

Thanks Ituri … but according to my informations this combination was consist an other otter species, the Oriental small-clawed otter. There were created two mixed exhibits with the same species combination (otters & squirrels & langurs, as You mentioned) at San Diego Zoo, a male Oriental small-clawed otter in one, and a female at the other.

Ituri, are You sure that the otter were European otters at San Diego?

The short-clawed otter mix was also done, but later they had a European otter (one of their last, they bred them in the early 90's) in that same exhibit instead of the aonyx.
