Some sad news to start the year, although also some good news, from Monarto Zoo's Facebook page:

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our cheetah male Jala. The difficult decision to humanely put Jala to sleep was made yesterday after his carers began witnessing a deterioration in his health due to kidney failure. At 14 years of age Jala enjoyed a full life, including playing a major role in Monarto’s successful cheetah breeding program siring six cubs in the last year and a half. He will be sorely missed by those that cared for him, who've said he was a lovely fella to work with, and the wider zoo family who’ve enjoyed visiting him in our cheetah habitat over the years.

On a positive note, cheetah keepers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of two new cheetah males from the Netherlands in the coming months. The new males will play an important role in the regional breeding program bringing new genetics to the Australasian region.

Some more Cheetah news from Monarto Zoo's Facebook page:

When 19 month old cheetah Kwatile was a cub it was suspected she had congenital cataracts. This was confirmed today when veterinary eye specialist Tony Read examined her and found she is mostly blind in her right eye. Luckily she has retained 90% vision in her left eye and the condition has had no impact on her day to day life. To find out more about Kwatile and the eye exam performed today tune into Ten Eyewitness News Adelaide tonight at 5pm for the full report.

It would appear that 2 fennec foxes have moved to Monarto. I believe they from Adelaide and used to be on exhibit where the coatis are now. I would assume they are off display.

Info from the zoos facebook page.

Sadly Zwala the Chimpanzee passed away this morning.
It is with much sadness that we announce the loss of Zwala, our fifteen year old female chimp, who passed away early this morning.

Zwala was anaesthetised on Thursday morning to remove her contraceptive implant as recommended for the regional breeding program. She did not wake up from the anaesthetic and remained in a coma-like state. Zoo keepers and vets monitored her around the clock but sadly she did not recover.

Her passing was peaceful, both our chimp troop and staff were given time to say goodbye. The cause of her death remains unclear at this stage; a post mortem examination will be performed which we hope will provide some answers.

She will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved her. Rest in Peace Zwala.

I'm so pleased that this birth went smoothly, considering the difficulties Forest had last time around.

one of the hand-reared cheetahs at Monarto has died. From their Facebook (dated 30 July):
It is with much sadness we announce the passing of Tsotsie, one of Monarto Zoo’s hand-reared ambassador Cheetah boys. Tsotsie was humanely put to sleep yesterday afternoon after his quality of life had rapidly deteriorated due to acute rena...l failure. Tsotsie was a very special member of the Monarto family and a favourite amongst visitors and staff alike, connecting the community to the plight of Africa’s most endangered big cat through our popular Cheetah Interactive Animal Experience. He will be deeply missed.

A female king cheetah has arrived at Monarto from Taronga Western Plains Zoo in the hope she will mate.
The paper say's the two males at Monarto are also 'king cheetahs' is any one aware if this is actually true as I thought they just had normal cheetahs?

was there a photo of the female with the article? I couldn't find anything on Google. WPZ only has two king cheetahs (brother and sister), which are the only two in Australia, but there are of course several spotted cheetahs carrying the same genes. I wonder if the new cheetah at Monarto actually is the WPZ king cheetah or just one of her offspring (spotted but carrying the king cheetah genes).
