Some sad news to start the year, although also some good news, from Monarto Zoo's Facebook page:
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our cheetah male Jala. The difficult decision to humanely put Jala to sleep was made yesterday after his carers began witnessing a deterioration in his health due to kidney failure. At 14 years of age Jala enjoyed a full life, including playing a major role in Monarto’s successful cheetah breeding program siring six cubs in the last year and a half. He will be sorely missed by those that cared for him, who've said he was a lovely fella to work with, and the wider zoo family who’ve enjoyed visiting him in our cheetah habitat over the years.
On a positive note, cheetah keepers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of two new cheetah males from the Netherlands in the coming months. The new males will play an important role in the regional breeding program bringing new genetics to the Australasian region.
