One of the weirdest moments of my entire life was just after the London Zoohistorica in 2001 when I got home from school (being 17 at the time) to find Clin Keeling had called for me during the day. I called him back and we had a long conversation about zoos in general and about his particular passion - education in zoos. I think my showing up as from Chesterfield (10-15min drive from Ashover) on the participants list had caught his attention! I met him a couple of times more at Bartlett/IZES events before his unfortunate death. He was a very knowledgable man. Far from infallible, but greatly missed.

His book about the story of Ashover Zoological Garden (he hated the word 'zoo') makes for fascinating reading.

I have been waiting to visit Monkey World for a couple of years but being car-less it's not easy.

I was promised a visit for my 40th birthday but it never happened. Last week we drove right past on the way somewhere else but my pleas for a pitstop fell on stony ground.

Ah well, one day I'll get there....

His wife also wrote a book about Pan's Garden which was also fascinating. Unfortunately I have yet to find a copy of Mr Keeling's book.

It's actually really easy to get to. I usually stay in Weymouth for a weekend, which is dead easy on the train, then take a day trip to Wool, either by train or bus direct from Weymouth, about 20 mins on the train, I forget on bus. Weymouth is a lovely place to stay and you can visit the Sea Life centre there, which is one of the best in my opinion.

Monkey World's animal director Jeremy Keeling has written a book about his experience of handrearing Amy and Gordon. It's called Jeremy and Amy and is due out on 1st July. It is priced at £16.99 but is on Amazon for £10.19 :)

Jeremy and Amy: The Extraordinary Story of One Man and His Orang-utan: Amazon.co.uk: Jeremy Keeling, Rick Broadbent: Books

JEREMY KEELING: The orangutan who saved my life | Mail Online

Just got my copy yesterday after pre-ordering on Amazon. I will do a review when I have finished it but I have already noted a couple of errors with the photo's towards the middle of the book

The captions on pictures 13 and 26 are the wrong way round. Picture 13 should read

"Getting to know Lingga in Paris Zoo. She was brought to Monkey World in 2005 to grow up with her own kind"

Lingaa arrived in 2007, not 2005!

Picture 26 has the caption for picture 13. It should read

"Apes on a plane - me and RoRo on our way back from the Pingtung Rescue centre in Taiwan"

I've not seen it but it apparently it also mentions Cherri the chimp being dead (in the index?) and I can vouch for her being alive and well yesterday!

It also says Clin was a Spanish chimp rather than from a lab.

golden cheek gibbon zoey finally gave birth last week too!

That is ab fab!!! :D Have all the confiscated golden cheeked gibbon females now given birth to at least one offspring?

Re the new - fat - orang utan. Is Onshine a Sumatran or Bornean? What is her history (before becoming a misplaced "pet")?

Obviously another Bornean (as all their Orangutans are) as not only does she look typical Bornean but they also say she'll join one of their existing groups. She is a 'fattie' but I've seen as bad (and worse too:eek:) in UK zoos in the past, thankfully not any more with the odd exception. They should be able to reduce her weight pretty quickly with proper diet and plenty of exercise.

only zoey and peanut have given birth to two offspring each. the two others, vietta and alex haven't. alex is the gibbon that lost an arm during an introduction to rafael and she currently lives alone.

My first post hope its ok

I visited monkey world at the weekend and witnessed Oshine moving around her enclosure very freely despite her size, her climbing ability was amazing to watch. She is in the indoor enclosure of the new orangutan nursery and has picked the top platform to sleep on where she spent most of the day hiding under a blanket. She is an borneon orang
The notice said on the window that she was born at Jakorta zoo indonesia before going to south africa.

Thanks for that information. I was wondering how she'd get through the 'walkways' that link the outdoor enclosure to the house - maybe she's not going to try just yet!

i also saw her at the weekend, and as jungle girl said, she was very active and agile for her size. i must admit i wonder if she would fit through the walkways!

I'm also wondering how an orangutan born in Jakarta Zoo can end up in private hands in South Africa?

I would suspect the answer is simply 'money'.
