Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre Monkey World news

Does anyone how long a visit to Monkey World may last? Are the slow loris typically visible? I'd like to fit a stop into my UK trip but it's the hardest one to fit in.

Don't really know what you want out of it, really!

If you want to just charge round and tick it off a list, you could probably do it in an hour and a half, after all, it's mainly multiples of chimps and orang.

If you want to have a good look, probably half a day.

Or just relax and spend the day, have lunch, take the kids round the play area, then the world's your lobster!

Thank you, this does help. It's a little of both. I tend to prefer taking my time at a facility - even close by, I like to go through some exhibits twice - and have a soft spot for primates especially right now, so I could probably fill a half day. It did initially come to my attention for to tick some off a list but my interest has grown since. It is very out of the way though so wanted to be sure if I committed to the long ride there it would be worth the time.

Not sure if this is still the case but when I visited in October 2019 the slow lorises rotated with the douroucoulis between an onshow and offshow enclosure on a weekly (I believe) basis, so weren’t visible at all on my visit. Worth confirming either with a ZooChat member that has visited more recently than myself or the zoo themselves via email if this is still the case, I would say. :)

When I visited, I spent a full day there, but I was taking it very slowly and allowing myself to spend half an hour or so looking at individual enclosures of interest. It is a nice side-effect of having so few species, but so many of them be of great interest and displayed rather well - you can spend anywhere from a single hour to a full day depending on how you wish your visit to play out.

Monkey World have never had douroucoulis….?

Yes, you are right, how embarrassing. Can’t remember what species it was then that they rotated with (must have had douroucoulis in my head because I presumed they would have been nocturnal like the lorises), or even if there was another species (it may have just been rotating between two enclosures), but they were certainly offshow on my visit and a keeper mentioned that a rotation system was the reason. I assume that this is no longer the case?

They have/had five loris who were on a rotation system with the onshow enclosure as they all live solitarily so that’ll probably be it. I haven’t visited in two years or so but when we did we saw one of the males in an onshow enclosure at the far end of the vet building near the gibbon aviaries.

Wonderful to hear, sounds like if I make the visit I will have plenty of time to enjoy the campus and the primates and a good chance to see the slow loris, one of the main targets species-wise.

If you are in the area, and making a particular out of the way trip, worth bearing in mind that the New Forest Wildlife Centre is relatively nearby, so you could do both in a day, if in a rush.

I saw on the tv series last year that Allison Cronin mentioned MK's intentions to hold Baboons,..either Mandrill or Gelada. Whats the latest news?

According to one of the older episodes of Monkey Life, they used to (or potentially may still) allow there to be one offspring born in their mixed-sex chimpanzee groups every five years to help maintain stability within their troops.

This was mentioned as the plan when Bart was born but that was 2007 and he's now the leader of his own troop. No births since then so definitely not doing the 'every 5 years' plan.

Thelma in Hananya's group was born in 2013 so she was the last one born at the park.

Regarding comments around Monkey World no longer breeding from their chimpanzee troops every five years or so; I was interested to refresh my memory on the demographics of their troops, which I’ve loosely followed over the years.

Bachelor troop:

7.0 born 1980’s
4.0 born 1990’s

Hananya’s troop:

4.11 born 1990’s
0.2 born 2000’s
0.1 born 2010’s

Bryan’s troop:

0.1 born 1990’s
3.2 born 2000’s

Bart’s Troop:

0.2 born 1970’s
2.7 born 1980’s
1.2 born 1990’s
1.1 born 2000’s

Total:

0.2 born 1970’s
9.7 born 1980’s
9.13 born 1990’s
4.5 born 2000’s
0.1 born 2010’s

It’s very clear Monkey World have an ageing population. In addition to no births in 11 years, only 1/5 of their population are now under 25 years of age.
