I'll check up on the orangs next time i go there my best bet though would probably be the oldest female, she has many features of the two subspecies. I forgot her name though.

Is it Kiani? If so I think she may be 3/4 Sumatran as her father was a hybrid too. From memory the original hybrid(s) at Melb were twins(Kiani & Kembar) They looked more like Sumatrans as babies, having light fuzzy coats.

There is a very good possiblity i'm not hot on orangs, i should ask my parents next time i can go.

Hybrid orangs at Melbourne Zoo

okay, I've just looked up my records;
.
There are (or were?) two hybrid Orangs at Melbourne.
The older one is/was 'Kiani'- one of the twins born in 1978. Her parents were Bobby x Olga. Bobby was a hybrid, Olga was Sumatran, so as I thought, Kiani is a 3/4 Sumatran hybrid.
The younger one is 'Gabby' born 1990. she is the daughter of Kiani (3/4 Sumatran hybrid) x 'Santan'(Sumatran)- that makes her a 7/8 Sumatran, only 1/8 Bornean but she is still a hybrid...

The higher incidence of Sumatran blood means both look far more like Sumatrans than a straight Bornean x Sumatran cross ( and if I remember correctly that is so) They are actually 2nd and 3rd generation crosses which is quite rare and wouldn't be allowed to happen nowadays.

Now does anyone know the names of the male Borneans born in 1983 and 1996.

I've found the 1996 one now...

'Weston' (Anak x Bella) born 30.1.96. Died 6.5. 97.
(poor little beggar, he didn't make 18 months.....)

I have a postcard of two Chester Bornean females with their young- one pair is Bella & Weston...

All looks very nice. Im still confused though if the hornbill aviary contains just Ground Hornbills or a number of hornbill species. In the link posted one sugests it is a hornbill aviary whilst another says it is a ground hornbill aviary. Does anyone know what is happening with that.

Having recently seen a picture of a southern ground hornbill feeding on a yellow-billed hornbill, I would think it is for the ground hornbills only

It could well have done as these birds are very highly prized among collectors, you only have to look at their colours to be in awe of them.

On the subject of hornbills, London's female tarictic is probably a mindanao (penelopides affinis)

Any news on when the new crocodile pool is opening?

I'm going down at the start of June and I don't want to miss it...

Have fun viewing it guys..... kids. Can you guys give me details on it? The species of crocodilian?

It's funny because i'm a kid as well

The pool is going to be home to phillipine crocodiles. It is the renovated pool in the zoo's "tropical realm" and the pool used to hold American Alligators and West African Dwarf Crocodiles.

From the early construction there pools appear quite deep and there is going to be large windows.

Phillipine crocs are critically endangered, aren't they according to Brady Barr ( the only guy who capture all 23 crocodillian species) "they are so rare that Villagers say that they are a myth."
Where is the zoo getting the crocs from? how much crocs? and how much money is it costing them?

Chester is getting 1.1 (so is London). I can't remember the entire story, but the crocs were sent to a zoo on mainland Europe for a quarantine period, before they were sent off to the different locations.

A couple of other zoos are also getting them in Europe. Paignton were supposed to get some werent they, well they were interested at least.

The Crocodile zoo in Denmark (I think denmark..) imported about 10 of the crocs which, as Jimmy said were kept at the centre for a few months. Then 2.2 were sent to Chester for quarantine (a pair for Chester and a Pair for London.)

Chester now has 1.1 as the pair for London has moved to their collection.

Zurich also received a pair, and have moved on from the Siamese Crocodiles.
