Movie review rant 2019

I really want to see this, but unforrtunately Spider-man comes out tomorrow and that takes priority unfortunately. ;)
Oh crude I forgot it comes out so soon. I know what I'm going to see later this week!

I just came across this trailer from a couple of months ago. It looks kind of funny from the trailer. Has Dave Bautista in what appears to be one of his "good" roles (his quality varies...), and Iko Uwais seems to be the main bad guy. Also (GotG connection) Karen Gillan is in it playing a cop, although not shown in this particular trailer.

And this one came out two days ago. The Jumanji sequel! You knew they had to.

I really liked the Jumanji reboot, it was a lot of fun. I probably did a little review of it at some point. This sequel, though, looks kind of painful. However the scene with all the mandrills on the bridges looks cool, and the dinosaur-ostrich-things will probably look good on the big screen too.

Land of the Lost
This was really dumb. Unfortunately I have a problem where once I start watching a movie I almost always have to continue to the end, possibly in the hope that it will magically become better. This movie did not. Released in 2009, it is based on an old tv series of the same name. I'm not sure if we got it in New Zealand - I don't remember it at all - but I googled it and the plot for the series was (surprisingly) exactly the same as that in the movie. Probably they should have changed it, because the plot was stupid. Will Ferrell is good in some movies and not so much in others. This was one of those others. The whole thing was unfunny, tiresome, and boring. I would recommend avoiding this one

My dad remembered this from his childhood in Canada
It is appallingly bad- there are a few episodes of it on youtube and it is hilariously terrible, featuring the worst costumes and clay models ever as well as some infinitely stupid lines.
Watch some of them and that will be your comedy for the week, honestly.

I found Land of the Lost really entertaining, but only because it is so dumb. Just watch it with a couple of friends (and maybe some beer, or a lot of beer) on a boring evening and just laugh at how weird and random everything is.

I also watched John Wick recently. It's a good, solid action movie and totally worth watching.

It's out tomorrow, expect my review tomorrow afternoon! ;)

Yeah, well Spider-Man didn't happen for, well, reasons... But Toy Story 4 isn't a bad replacement to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and it's a proper Pixar movie with all the heart you'd expect from that company.
All your old favourites are back, but Mr Potatohead doesn't get much to say, and when he does you can tell it's a different voice actor, but Slink sounds spot on and gets a fair bit more dialogue. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are fantastic as Woody and Buzz, both actors emotional voice performance carry the film above and beyond, Forky is a fantastic addition, as are Key and Peel as a conjoined bunny/chick toy, and it's great to have Bo Peep back as well. But stand out performance goes to Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom, best addition to the Toy Story mythos ever.
This film has heart and soul galore, you can't even hate the villain of the piece too much once she explains her reasoning. If you don't get a little emotional at this movie then I don't think you have feelings... And stick around for the credits, definitely worth a watch!

I left the cinema feeling like part of my childhood had ended, but in a good way, not a Dumbo remake way. A commendable 8/10, not bad for a movie I'd written off as a cheap cash grab before seeing it.

But it's not a different voice actor :p They used unused recordings from previous media.

This week I saw Spiderman: Far From Home and Toy Story 4 earlier this week and both films really were a spectacle.

Spiderman was excellent. I don't want to get into spoiler territory that much but I will say that . If you seen the movie, you will know what I mean when I say that it really was a visual spectacle. Also the post credits scenes were also wild and I am eager to see where they will take the story from here.

As far as Toy Story goes, I'm pretty sure just about everyone thought three was the perfect ending to the series and four was merely a cash grab, but it some how made itself feel necessary. The new characters were great, my favorite also being Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom. I also really enjoyed the bunny and ducky duo. I even quite liked Forky, who made for some great comic relief. If I had one complaint, I was dissipated that many of the original characters were very underustelised besides Woody, Buzz, Bo Peep and occasionally Jessie. I understand cases like Potato head, who actually has the same voice actor, even though he passed they were able to splice together older pieces of film to get him the movie (Editors Note: I cross-posted with Thylo, as I typed much of this earlier in the day) but I was disappointed by the lack of Rex, Slinky and Hamm. Otherwise the ending was excellent and I think now they have a truly fitting end to the Toy Story franchise.

Not seen Toy Story 4 yet but the above reviews really make me want to!

I did see Spider-Man: Far From Home, however, and I really enjoyed it. Tbh I thought the first half was a little rushed at parts and there are some really clunky expositions scenes. This movie is shorter for a Marvel film, and probably could have benefited from an extra 10-15 minutes to flesh out the beginning a bit more. That said, the second half and all of the payoff set up in the first half I loved completely. There are a few visually spectacular scenes in particular that I loved. Overall the movie told the story I hoped it would, and Mysterio makes for a great addition to the MCU. They captured the teenage awkwardness perfectly, too. I've also never been more confused by and in love with spidey-sense. There will definitely be some major repercussions moving forward as well, which is always welcome. The mid-credit scene is one of the best and most influential in the MCU, and featured more than one surprise. The end-credit scene however... The more I think about it, the more I hate it. I think they were just going for a fun little twist on the story, but if you think about it it actually messes up the plot quite a bit while also removing a lot of weight carried by some of the characters. That said, I'm excited to see where they go with all of this.

That's strange, I put a spoiler box here that didn't show up. Anybody know how to d this?

When making a post, find the box that has all the insert options ("smilies", image, media, and then "insert"). It's next to the camera icon. Click on that and spoiler should be the second option down.

Do this: put the word spoiler within two sets of brackets and add a / in front of the second spoiler, and between the two sets of brackets, write the text you want hidden.

I still can't seem to get it. Ah well, I was just talking about a very visually impressive fight scene. You should know what I'm talking about if you seen the movie.

The / is only in front of the second spoiler. Both spoilers need brackets around them. And no = symbol anywhere.

i.e. if I replace the word spoiler with cucumber (so that the effect can be seen):

[cucumber]This is a spoiler[/cucumber]
