Chester Zoo My Chester Zoo Visits

Can you ask about the two hornbills please? (see above)

They are 2.0 that were bred at the zoo. I obviously need my eye testing as they are certainly two males and have had that confirmed from a reliable source.

Maybe you could find out whether the Anteaters are on display yet? I found it annoying that they are on the new map but were not on display when I visited a month or so back when it was first changed!!

Also whether Stuma (Okapi) has come back into season and whether the Duiker is on display yet?

Might find the answers myself if I get time to visit tomorrow.

I was there in the first week of May and they had one anteater, which seemed to do nothing except sleep. So you'll have to be lucky to see one.

Visited today was slightly soggy but zoo was relatively empty which was good. Black Tailed Marmosets are now on show (Picture will be in the gallery soon). There is a new exhibition in the Joseph Banks Room named Vets in Action were you can scan six chimp teddys for a microchip then match it up to the relavent records on the computer. All of the records are of current Chester Chimps but with the names changed to those of the vet team. There is also a thermal imaging camera where you can see uself on a plasma screen in thermal view including you body core temperature. There is also a selection of heart beats from different animals. Really enjoyed having a look around the exhibition.
No sign of the prewalski horse so I would assume the last two have been moved on I think im right in saying that the younger horse was moved to another collection. in the horse paddock today was a single Oryx not sure why it was in there on its own.

That's the male scimitar-horned oryx. Apparently he's a bit of a handful so the zoo is using the empty Przewalski horse paddock to separate him from the rest of the heard.

Was there any sign of the anteater? I didn't see him at all yesterday. Also worth mentioning from yesterday was that the coatis seemed to have moved to the nearest group of trees, so you could actually see them for a change. Hopefully the zoo has found a way of persuading them closer to the public.

Other notes; there's a lovely display of wild flowers at the back of the Tropical Realm where the old raptor aviaries were that are well worth a look and for those into native wildlife, some really ugly (and tiny) coot chicks in the moat around Monkey Islands.

No sign unfortunetly the shutters leading to the indoor enclosure were closed all day. Also thanks for the info on the Oryx. Will the porcupines been moved into the horse paddock soon do you know?

Have I missed something on this forum as I don`t think I`ve read anything saying that the Porcupines are moving into the Prewalskis Horse Paddock on the forum?

No it wasn't mentioned on the forum but mentioned to me by somebody away from the forum

I wasn't aware of the porcupine arrangements being a secret and have been discussing them openly with people around the zoo for the last month.
And this is long-term, I assume.
Unlikely, as this is the area due for development to house the African hunting dogs. When work does commence, there'll be an African village, safari vehicles, toilets, catering and raised viewing (for the rhinos) in this area.

.

I too was unaware of this being a closely guarded secret. It's not exactly earth shattering news now is it.

Not much to report today, except there were three tiny Banded Mongoose young.

Well, I gleamed a bit more news but probably not much interest for many of you

Like the Visayan Taricitic Hornbill has hatched in IoD.

The female Writhed Hornbill born at Chester is now back on show, not sure where the White bellied go-away birds have gone thou.

Also a new Rhinocerous Hornbill, if I have got this right this is a new male to pair up with the lone female (which I believe was bred at the zoo).

They were moved to offshow aviaries last winter, and should be back in the zoo again soon.

They were on show in the tropical realm a couple of weeks ago and in the writhed hornbill female (that was bred at the zoo) aviary. Now she is back in that aviary.
