Chester Zoo My Chester Zoo Visits

Oh, must have been after my last visit Taun. In that case I have no idea where they are now unless they're in Tsavo.

Also a new Rhinocerous Hornbill, if I have got this right this is a new male to pair up with the lone female (which I believe was bred at the zoo).

The male came from Paultons Park a few months ago to pair up with the Chester reared female chick.

For those who like to keep track, I was at Jihlava Zoo in the Czech Republic yesterday and was able to catch up with some old friends - the two female Campbell's Guenons from Monkey Islands. Both are doing well; according to the curator one has been pregnant but the youngster was stillborn, so it's possible this animal will breed in the future. Either way, both animals look in fine fettle.

Visited this morning (brought forward from Friday so couldn't write in advance on here) - it was very busy.
Here are some brief details:

There appears to be another young Vicuna
Saw 1.1 Black-Tailed Marmosets
No sign of Giant Otters :(
Kelly and Bella will depart quite soon
'Ecko' was being painted for Rhino Mania

I visited yesterday, no real news since it appears quite a lot of us have been visiting recently, however just a one or two things I picked up on

New snake species in the Tropical Realm. Its the vivarium next to the Caiman Lizards which housed Mangrove Snakes on my last few visits. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the species is?

The Iguana exhibit at Islands In Danger. The gates between the 3 were opened and I could only spot one Iguana. My Iguana idenification skills arent all that, so im not sure what species it was. Anyway, I was wondering what happened there?

Other than that, an enjoyable visit. Some of the new species (Green Jay, Black Tailed Marmosets) are very nice additions. Oh, and the Red & Yellow Barbets are back in the African Aviary, and showing themselves rather well too.

Visited today both of the Okapi were locked outside today and there appeared to be a small opening open inside with a small bowl left to the side with a few leafs scattered around the indoor enclosure which i assumed would be for the Duiker but visted several times during the day but no sign. Also noticed today that Iblis was having a good attempt at dominating Asha and also attempting to mate her at one point although she didnt seem to impressed by this and quickly gave him a swipe for his trouble. No sign again of the Anteater but the exterior door was open today which is progress i guess .
Also the Warty Pigs in the Cattle house now have piglets counted atleast two the male has been separated from the female and the piglets and the Cattle house has been closed to visitors.

Hope for the future and some cubs then? This is really the last year that she will be fertile enough to give Tejas some half siblings.......

Thanks Rob for the confirmation on the Snakes :)

Totally forgot to make any attempt to spot the Duiker on Thursday though. Both Okapis were outside and I imagine if the Duiker was allowed out with them, it'd be darn difficult to spot it since the zoo has rather wonderfully allowed the grass to grow very tall.

Can anyone find the planning aplication for the African Hunting Dogs and the African Village as I would love to see!

It's not been submitted yet. When it has it will be available here: Search Results

I doubt they'll actually need one, as most of the buildings are likely to be classed as temporary structures. The modifications to the paddock certainly won't need planning permission.

Instead of starting a new thread thought I would drop this on here.
Will be visiting Tuesday 08/06/10 what should I look for and what are going to be the best places to take photographs from are there any photographs you would like me to try and get that haven't been taken already or are there any you would like updated.
What are going to be the highlights of my visit bare in ming I like all forms of wildlife.

try and get in for opening at ten if possible and head straight to Realm of the Red Ape. If you're early, this will be a highlight, as will the Giant Otters which are nearby and the Black Rhino Experience on the other side of the zoo.

In terms of unusual species, ones to watch for include:

Burmese Brow-antered Deer
Philippine Spotted Deer
Kirk's Dik-Dik
It's possible the Natal Red Duiker may be on show in the Okapi House
North-eastern Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus soemerringii)
Giant Otter
Buffy-headed Capuchin (Cebus xanthosternos)
Livingstone's Fruit Bat (Pteropus livingstonii - in the Fruit Bat Forest there are three species- tiny Seba's, mid-sized Rodrigues and bloody huge Livingstone's!)
Mount Kulal Spiny Mouse (Acomys species novum - in the Okapi House and yet to be properly described.)

Black-and-White Laughing Thrush (aviary on the left just before you enter the Tropical Realm)
The whole upper row of aviaries in the Tropical Realm is full of rarities - Brown-breasted Barbet springs to mind.
Red Bird of Paradise (in Islands in Danger)

Philippine Crocodile (in Tropical Realm)
Lesser Antillean Iguana (in Islands in Danger)
Caiman Lizard (In Tropical Realm)
Mangrove Monitor (in the Elephant House)
Common Tuatara (in Tropical Realm)

Mallorcan Midwife Toad (in a little hut between the Sand Lizard vivarium and the jaguar house - not easy to see)
Lake Zacapu Salamander (Ambystoma andersoni - in the Aquarium)

Pla Eesok Barb (Probarbus julieni - in the Elephant House)
A very nice tank with four species of Elephantnose Trunkfish (in the Aquarium)
Both the usual Mexican Blind Cave Fish (Astyanax mexicanus - in the Fruit Bat Forest) and Omani Blind Cave Fish (Garra barreimiae -in the Aquarium)

Exhibit-wise, the stars are the superb Bears of the Cloud Forest, the very nice Tsavo aviary, the new Giant Otter area, the Europe on the Edge aviary, Islands in Danger, the Okapi House and the new Butterfly House.

I really do recommend you try to poke in as many corners as possible as there's some great stuff tucked away!

I agree with all the suggestions that have been made - I can only add that I would check the monkey islands, the opportunities are good if they are outside (but they don't come out often) and check the miniature monkeys next door too, no-one has posted a shot of the new black-tailed marmosets yet and I would love to see a shot of the Geoffroy's marmosets feeding on sap from their 'gum tree'.
