Chester Zoo My Chester Zoo Visits

Thanks SMR.

Couple of things, does anyone know where the two additional Visayan Taricitic Hornbills in Island of danger have come from? Are these the 2.0 that were bred at the zoo?

And is the Rhinoscerous Hornbill pair in the old chinese aviary (I think that was what the aviary was) the pair that were in the tropical realm?

I think the tarictis are a new pair.

The pair of rhinoceros hornbills in the Asian aviary are probably the Chester bred female and the male who arrived in 2009. Just a guess though.

In response to recent posts...

I too have been quite lucky with the Borneans, most recently last week when both mothers and babies were outside offering amazing views. I do often have to visit several times though to ensure a view.

Tim mentioned that the Pied enclosure does now have new inhabitants, but I can't remember what species is now in there. We certainly didn't see anything last week, but they are there apparantly.

Amazing news about the bears mating. Spring is in the air as the Okapis were at it last week too...looks like we need to keep fingers crossed for some exciting births coming soon.

Regards the rhinos.Tim revealed that he is keen to try a lot more rotation of the different animals to encourage breeding. If mother is separated from youngster for a short period and introduced to the male, there is more chance of a successful mating.Maybe this could explain some recent changes?

Good to see the otters getting on so well. All the guidelines and husbandary suggest they should not have been introduced for 6 weeks, So, nice to see intuition and instinct for a speedier introduction has paid off!

By the way. Finally read the entire natural vision planning application last week. It is extremely impressive, and i can't wait for approval and work to commence, budget willing!

ISIS lists Chester as having 2 male Eastern Pygmy Marmosets. Could this be the new species in the pied Tamarin enclosure?

Eastern Pygmy Marmosets are new at Chester, another Tamarin species is due this year , as yet undecided.

~Visited today but not much to report.

The giant otters are getting along fine. If the female strays out of sight of the male, he will call and look for her.

Ibis is now dominant over Asha meaning that the keepers are closelty watching her food intake in case he is 'getting the lion's share'.

The Tarictic Hornbills mentioned by Taun are a new pair. The female Writhed Hornbill is sealed up in her nest and was being fed by the male when I walked past.

There are 4-5 new tropical marine fish species in the aquarium, most unlabelled and most unknow to me.

The Asian birds are now in one of the former snowy owl aviaries, the other one is still empty. The rhinoceros Hornbills are now in the former kestrel aviary.

Anyone wanting to know about the birds of paradise please PM me.

Bongorob where the second pair of Taricitic Hornbills (not the new pair or the pair in the Tropical realm) nesting aswell? I saw the female was sealing the nest on Monday?

Also I saw the female Writhed Hornbill was starting to seal her nest up on Sunday but nothing on Monday, great news she has laid. This could be a great year for Chester and hornbills.

I'll mention it here, could you am interested in knowing about the BoP and will PM you about it sometime as well.

I didn't notice today, but the nest was sealed up a week or two ago.

You lads on about a third tarictic pair?
Or is it just 2 breeding pairs of pure-bred Visayas?

Lets clear this up, Chesters two pure-bred breeding pairs of Visayan Taricitic Hornbills (Penelopides panini panini) are currently nesting.

Another pair appeared in the islands of danger building, this are not nesting. Are you saying this is a hybrid pair or another pure-bred breeding pair?

Tarictic Hornbills

one pair housed in the Tropical Realm
the original breeding pair housed in Islands in danger by the exit
a new pair housed in Islands in Danger in part of the bird of paradise aviary, which has been divided.

I think the new birds are a pure-bred pair. I didn't have time to find out. I can't see Chester bringing in hybrids though.

ISIS currently lists only Penelopides panini panini (4.2 birds) at Chester and no other birds.

Both Bourton and Bristol maintain a hybrid P. panini female.

Does this explain the current set up at Chester?
Btw, great the 2 breeding pairs are nesting.

The "third" pair was definitely a male and female when I saw them on Monday. I would suggest ISIS is a little out of date.

Does the zoo still have 2:0 Grevy's Zebra? Is the rumour correct that females may be due soon? Also, have the stallions that have left stayed within the UK or gone to Europe?

They still have 2.0 and are going to import females. No idea where the other males have gone to.
