I've already changed plans: Going tommorow, to wave him off. :(

EDIT: Ah. Didn't see the 'before'. :(

30/1/10:

- Well, guess what? Zambar was there today, he won't be going till Monday morning. We watched him come inside to be fed, and at one point he tried to bring his meat joint into the nextdoor chamber, but couldn't fit it through the door: But kept trying till success! We had a long chat to Phil over there just after he fed the tigers, where he explained to us the move, also confirming that they intend to get a new breeding pair when Zambar goes. He also noted that work on the new cheetah enclosure should start work in June, with the Przewalski's who inhabit the site moving to the ankole paddock (which orginally housed wild horses in the first place). Elsewhere on the tiger front Yenna 'pulled a Zambar' on us, leaping to visitors at the window.
- Saw both Indeever and Irina for the first time today, who are now out in the open. Both were sitting behind the rockfaces, Irina curled asleep and Indeever watching visitors, obviously quite timidly with his ears pulled along his head. But they're incredibly beautiful cats.
- Also saw a serval, think it was Gandalf, stalking a pigeon today. Unfortunately it was too far away for him to catch it in the air when it flew off!
- While the two larger indoor enclosures in Aridlands are still empty, the former bull snake exhibit is fully furnished like a larger version of the club-tail iguana with the lights on, meaning something should be going in there very soon.

Nice to get confirmation on a new pair of Tigers, what with the new Snow Leopards and the two off show Cheetahs coming on show. :D

Not to mention Kaia! Going at this rate, all we need now is a new breeding pair of ocelots! (And the return of lions and clouded leopards please :D)

I think there's only one female serval, but I'm not sure whether she is able to breed: Marwell certainly hasn't had any serval kits in a very long time.

Sun Bears?

Just after Marwell opened, they were given a pair of sun bears from Weyhill Zoo (now the Hawk Conservancy) that had outgrown their accomodation. They lived in the stable yard along with a lot of the carnivores at the time, but got pretty destructive and left Marwell after a year or so. Whilst I'd love to see sun bears again, there are no plans I know of.

Cheers :) I would have said, too, that the new enclosure being built wouldn't be big enough for all four. Any ideas on when it is due to be completed? It hasn't developed much between my visits when it started, but then I put that down to the bad weather.

Yesterday there was a few broken rocks but the mesh still hasn't been put up. I reckon it'll be completed around Easter time so that Suki and Juba can move to the old pens before the new cheetah enclosure is completed in turn.

Visit to Marwell 31/01/10

On my visit today, one of the cat keepers told me that Zambar was indoors and they were putting the crate (which had "Jagasar" printed on the side of it) in front of the door, to get him used to seeing and smelling it, ready for the trip to Blackpool early tomorrow morning. As per Zambar's review yesterday, the keeper confirmed that he thought Marwell should be fairly high up the list for a breeding pair of tigers in the future, although he said there aren't many available at the moment. He also said they might allow Yenna and Gamin to have the run of both enclosures in the mean time.

It was lovely to see Indeever and Irina the snow leopards for the first time today. They really are a beautiful pair of cats. Indeever was lying behind the rocks in the top corner of his half of the enclosure, whilst Irina was pacing and vocalising behind the rocks in her half of the enclosure. I was pleased to see, later in the day, that she was curled up too. I hope they take to each other. It will be good to have Yasmin back on-show at some point as well - she is currently in the Stable Yard.

I haven't seen the male red panda at all this month, which is strange. Usually he can be seen almost at the very top of the tree, whereas the female (with a bald tail) tends to stay only halfway up, so I hope he has just been in one of the houses each time I have visited. Have any of the other Marwell regulars seen him recently?

One end of the shop is being converted into a cafeteria at the moment. I'm sure this will be most welcome for visitors wishing to take refreshment either before or after they walk around the park, although I hope the prices are more competitive than those at Cafe Graze ;)

Re Mhale, Red Panda

Hi Mhale,

Its funny you should say that you have only seen one Red Panda for the last month.

I have had the same experience.

Only one could again be seen again on Saturday 30 January.

I just put it down to the other one sleeping in the house.

Hope nothing has happened to one of them.

No, I have not seen the second Red Panda for a good long while. I always seem to only see the one with the bald tail.

Haven't been round the red panda way for a couple of visits, so I can't say for sure; though I agree I haven't seen him in ages. I admit that I haven't been to the Encounter Village corner in a while, it doesn't excite as much as it used to. And has anyone seen the pottos recentley, usually you see them curled up at the top, but in recent visits they've always been invisible.

Interesting that they're doing that with the shop, it's been planned for a long time now. This probably means that work on the new 6m entrance/shop/intepretation centre should begin fairly soon, and I think the other half of the current shop will be a play area or exhibit for Amazon animals.

I have looked, and been dissapointed to not see the Pottos on my last two visits, for definate. I'm unsure if I saw them before then either.

Hello, I've been at Marwell today and there was a few things I noticed. Three warthogs were in the front part of the house asleep together. Normally it's just the pair so I don't know whose been allowed to mix with who. The sign saying they are undergoing veterinary treatment is no longer there. There is a Scimitar Horned Oryx in the Zebra hard standings behind Leopard Lookout, and the new Serval exhibit has progressed further. I only saw the female Snow Leopard today, the male was nowhere to be seen. I saw the off show Cheetahs for the first time today. Zambar, you were right, you get a good view of them over by where Nightlife used to be.

There has been a second Addax birth, and the Tigers were separated into different enclosures. I checked at the house, and the gate was closed so they couldn't get to each other. Some substrate has gone in the empty vivarium up by the Red Ruffed Lemurs, and there are still two empty Lemur exhibits. The Ring Tailed Lemurs were able to get outside, which they hadn't been on my past few visits. The enclosures in Aridlands are still empty.

There was a sign saying some promotional filming was being done today, but I didn't see any. It's probably something Valentines Related with the animals to go on the website.

In Tropical World, the Green Tree Python was absent, the big Spider (I forget the type) has gone where the Scorpions were, the scorpions have moved to where the toad was. The toad is no longer on show and the old Spider's vivarium is now empty.

The Tamarin walkthrough is still closed (do we know why?) and the Vicuna area is still blocked off (again, any idea as to why?) There was no sign of the Pottos or the bushy tailed Red Panda again today.

And that's about all I can remember...

The horned frogs died last year, and the tamarin walkthrough has been closed because the tamarins got too tame for their own good due to constant feeding by ignorant visitors. Just shows what a great failure I feel that particular enclosure has turned out to be.

Pottos should still be at Marwell due to remaining signage and the fact there were no changes on the animal inventory (unless something sudden happened to all three in just a few months) although I haven't seen them in a while either. Maybe they've just got more secretive?

Maybe a volunteer could be in the Tamarin walkthrough to supervise the visitors. I would love it if they used the locked door system on the Wallaby enclosure. I'm getting fed up of getting funny looks for following the rules when it comes to this.

Oh, also, why is the Takin house shut off with a big log and the male and female been separated into seperate sides of the enclosure? Could a baby be on the way?

Possibly. The last calf's death actually involved the male Mooshu, so a new seperation system will be put in use to prevent such another occurence.
