Nasu animal kingdom

Pallas’s cat Polly died on May 23. She had a mass in her larynx and went through treatment until she slightly recovered before being found dead.

Polly was one of the more famous animals from the park, helping her species get attention and fame in Japan. She arrived from Sweden in 2016 and only had one litter of two surviving kittens during her stay in Nasu.

The kingdom will be displaying stag and rhinoceros beetles from June 21 until the end of summer. The exhibit, located next to the Valais black-nosed sheep, requires an additional entry fee of 300 yen. Visitors are also given the opportunity to hold a branch where a beetle is resting on (but are not allowed to touch the animal). The event is subject to extension.

I think we now know what will happen to this area…

The new area, named Beaver Swamp, will be a 1200 meter square exhibit which plans to recreate a beaver dam. In addition to beavers the striped skunks and North American porcupines will also be exhibited in this new area. Judging from the plans, they won’t be mixed, (which is a wasted opportunity if you ask me).

the exhibit is set to open in July 17.

This does beg the question what will happen to the old enclosures in wolf hills, beaver creek, and the porcupine display?

A beaver fan on twitter has been giving updates on the new Beaver Swamp exhibit once every few days. With nineteen days left the exhibit is closer to completion. The porcupine enclosure is especially interesting since it’s just a fenced off part if a grove/forest.

The park will have an unveiling ceremony for a memorial to honor the late Tetsuya Sato on the 18th this month.

The kingdom received criticism from beaver community on twitter about the new exhibit using hot wire, including near the bodies of water and narrow pathways. The criticism increased after the kingdom uploaded a video walkthrough of the exhibit, which a beaver did end up touching the hot wire. The park deleted the video and reuploaded it, removing the footage of the shock, all without any explanation. At least one member of the beaver community did not take this well.

The kingdom has obtained a breeding pair of burrowing owls. The owls will be displayed in ten former skunk enclosures sometime in the future.

A red panda cub was born in July 11. It is being parent reared by its mother Gumi but keepers are monitoring the cub and providing it milk.

An American beaver named Pibo escaped from its enclosure in Beaver Swamp on October 1st and unfortunately was found dead within park grounds on the third of October.

I do not want to sound snarky about this situation but this incident proves the flaw of the new beaver enclosure, which prioritized aesthetic over safety and used mesh with wood railings which probably can’t withstand the beavers. Which is why hot wire was used making parts of the enclosure borderline inaccessible for the animals. The staff should work on this enclosure before next summer.

Also, I hope that the kingdom and the press doesn’t try to retcon this incident, like the cotton-top tamarin incident, and remove/private anything mentioning this incident.

A detail I failed to mention on the previous post was that the blog post I posted was added discreetly. It wasn’t on the kingdom’s home page not could it be found on the main note/blog page. It could only be found as the “next post” under the post that was posted previously and the one that was posted after. The Japanese beaver community (along with some zoo enthusiasts) did not take the kingdom’s lack of transparency well, especially when the escape was thought to be a result of human error.

Following the commotion and pressure from the beaver fans, the kingdom apologized for the lack of transparency and gave the details of Pibo’s escape and death.

Pibo was in his overnight holding enclosure of the day of his escape. It is believed that Pibo escaped in the evening by pulling the mesh of said enclosure and causing it to break. Pibo was first in the “Beaver Swamp” display before escaping there as well. This is determined to be a result of the hot wire not working due to management error.

Pibo’s absence was found out on the next day by a keeper and more than 10 staff members took part in the search. Pibo was found dead the next day in the forested area in the park. After an autopsy, it was determined that he died from a chest contusion.

The Beaver Swamp exhibit has been closed for the time being. A committee has been established to consider preventative measures such as examining the night shelter and taking measures to prevent escapes.
