San Diego Zoo New "Africa Rocks" complex at San Diego Zoo

Correct.

Ibex, probably Nubian.

Ratel, right before the entrance to Madagascan Forest (if traveling right to left).

I cant find the Ratel/Honey badger but... YES:D:D:D:D:D I THOUGHT THE IBEX WHERE CUT. maybe this wont be a let down after all. Thanks to otter lord for this image.

I mispoke earlier. Vervet are still in. Zebras were one of the first animals cut, probably about a year ago. The amount of animals before were pretty ambitious so the cuts have enabled larger animal spaces and more interpretive garden spaces. Most of my info is from AZA which was held here last month. I think I can post an updated plan on the gallery...

Why were zebras cut?

That is a really nice variety of animals - something for everyone (except the reptile lovers). It is kind of odd there is not one reptile exhibit, since even the small redo of the panda walk added Mangshan vipers and Elephant Odyssey has rattlesnakes and the original Tiger Canyon had python. Still it is nice there are two small carnivores (ratel and fossa), though a true small cat would have piqued my interest much more (black footed cat anyone?). It also appears the leopard exhibit is two spaces side by side, which should allow for a breeding setup.

There is one reptile exhibit: dwarf crocodile.

It's just a guess, but potentially, there is room for other exhibits to be built featuring a wide variety of smaller animals (such as a small aviary in the coroner of a path). They could have allocated room for more exhibits to be built, without specifically marking them on the map. I did once find a plan that suggested this as a possibility, but it was quite hard to read and I do not know where I found it.

Well why else would they cut it? they have zebras already, Unless it was to make space for that new garden.

Not enough room for the animals
More landscaping
Plans for animals elsewhere
Animal husbandry reasons
Change in design ethos
Zoo no longer interested in displaying said species
etc.

The November issue of ZooNooz has a feature article on Africa Rocks, but there is not a lot of detail. It is more of a promo piece "watch for this exciting addition in summer 2017" (and no specific dates given, just summer). There is also a 2017 calendar included and each month has an animal that will be part of the new exhibit. Two of the months feature a small bird, which may be species not yet mentioned (or maybe they were, I have not read this thread in a while). The two species are white-fronted bee eater and beautiful sunbird. Here is a link to the article itself, which does not mention the birds but gives a general overview: Rock Stars

The bottom of the article has a link to download the calendar which will take you to a PDF of the entire November magazine.

Is it just me, or does the leopard picture look suspiciously like an Amur leopard?

Edit: After reading this thread in its entirety, I realize that this was expected and not really that suspicious.
