ZSL Whipsnade Zoo New Animals for Easter!

I'm going on my first ever trip to Whipsnade on Wednesday, so I'm hoping that most of the animals will be out then, though I'll probably be a bit early wolverine wise by the sound of it.

Be warned- Whipsnade is very weather dependant because its on top of the Downs. On a good day it is great, on a wet or windy one it can be pretty miserable. These new developments are on the more exposed side of the park too.

Monkeyworld, see the European elephants thread.

Karishma is due at some point this month apparently

I had checked with them Pertinax and kind of expected it not to be finished when we visited but we love visiting Whipsnade so it certainly did not spoil it!

Whipsnade has a lovely tranquil atmosphere to it we find whatever time of year you visit and we go as much for the surroundings and view as the animals.
Out of all the zoos/wildlife parks I have visited (probably not as many as most but I am trying) Whipsnade always gives me 'the feel good' factor and I come away all glowy and feel like I have escaped the world while I am in there and also you get a different breed of visitors than you get at alot of zoos.

Have a lovely day Zambar whatever the weather!

They said on the bus tour the elephant was due any day!

Sadly the video misses out what we want to see lol no Lynx, boar or wolverine! nor any enclosures!

Interesting you should say that. I've been visiting Whipsnade since I was very small (many moons ago now) and it is probably still my favourite animal collection overall- for the same reasons you mention. Despite there being no Gorillas or primates generally...

Comparing the new map to the one I got this week they have added Lubetkin Arena???? any idea? obviously something to do with the old elephant house but arena??? When we went one side of it was full of trees waiting to be planted

Hi

I was at Whipsnade yesterday (Tuesday 6 April) and some of the new animals appear to be around now!:)

One of the Lynx is now in their new enclosure. I think the ZSL lady by the enclosure said it was the female and she added that the male is on site and ready to be introduced very soon; it could be sometime this week. The lynx that was in the cage was sleeping most of the time by a tree trunk at the back of the enclosure. The wolverine is apparantly inside its new area which is opposite to the bears although I did not see it.

I was also interested to see that the female Siberian tiger is still present in the zoo as I thought I heard that she was being transfered to another zoo?

I went for my first ever trip to Whipsnade today, and while there were some cold winds and light showers, it wasn't too bad and dried up in the afternoon. WWW wise, I saw the lynx resting under a fallen log, the young pair of wild boar foraging through the leaf litter, the moose pacing about the paddock and the wolverine curled up at the top of the tree. So as you can imagine, all the enclosures are complete. They'll be a male wolverine joining their female on Friday as with the lynx Del mentioned.

And my impression of Whipsnade today was excellent. Fantastic all round, saw my first indian rhinos, brown bears, wolverine and gaur today, got really close to the lions and the elephants on their walk and the Sea Lion Demonstration was pretty good too. 10/10, look forward to returning.

Glad you enjoyed your trip- its a great place.

I see from your photos that a couple of the Indian rhinos were in their inside quarters. Was there any sign of usage of the bathing moat/pools? (The females have been reluctant to enter the water- too steep- but they haven't changed the design so far).

I made a couple of comments on your rhino pix.

No usage at all from what I saw. There was some bubbles coming out of the pool at one point, but as there was no silouette or anything else to suggest a submerged rhino I guessed it was some kind of cleaning/filter system.

No, you would definately have seen the Rhino's head, back etc.

It is a bizarre situation- they purpose built this obviously expensive indoor house with the heated watermoat -indian rhino being far more aquatic than the other species. But there is this problem about the females being unwilling to enter the water, possibly because the access is too steep. The bull will do so but now they keep him in the old area most of the time.

I've been unable to establish if the problem is still the same or has been overcome but when I asked last year, they admitted they still didn't use the water indoors. :o

Hi,

I went to Whipsnade zoo again today (Friday 9 April). Please see my pictures on the gallery that I have just posted. The male Lynx has now been introduced and can be seen in the new enclosure. The member of ZSL staff thought he had been added on Wednesday; the two animals appear to be ignoring each other at the moment and also seem to have two distinct favourite areas in the enclosure. The female Wolverine could just about be seen up a tree; the male wolverine will apparently now arrive next week.

The lions had been fed early on and were all clearly enjoying their strips of meat. Most of the pride were close to the glass viewing area so I was able to get some good photos here. The wolves were lively as they had also been fed and some of the food was scattered towards the front of their enclosure meaning some of the pack got close to the viewing area.

I went to see the Asian Rhinos and indeed as other posters have said the indoor house was deserted and had no sign of any recent activity in the water!

Overall particularly with the weather being so good today it was a great visit and the new enclosures are starting to look interesting.

I visited Whipsnade for the first ever time today and what a wonderful place it is I most definitely be visiting again soon. A highlight being the 4 day old Elephant calf wobbling around its mother like it had a few to many ciders...

Anyway after we spent a little time trying to play sport the Wolverine (Which is very difficult!) a keepers came and pointed him out and told us a few goings on at the park.

- A male wolverine and a another moose are both in quarantine.
- The male giraffe is being moved to Port Lympne to take part in the breeding program. So maybe this is a start of London and Aspinall's resolving there difference's?
- Both Cheetahs may be pregnant but one definitely is pregnant.
- The Pygmy Hippo is pregnant.
- Also a One horned rhino is also pregnant.

Not a bad days findings for a first ever visit

Seeing as Port Lympne are holding surplus male Giraffes I don`t think any breeding will be taking place, more a case of a over represented animal being moved out so a less well represented male can be moved in.

Good tidings all around.

Re rhinos:
Any idea which Indian rhino may be pregnant. Is it Behan? Whom is the sire (Jaffna?) or is Hugo a first-timer?
