Not a problem we all have days like that!Just thought I would get it cleared up other wise some people would be saying tha Port Lympne were going to be re-starting breeding from Giraffes again which is not the current plan.

Seeing as Port Lympne are holding surplus male Giraffes I don`t think any breeding will be taking place, more a case of a over represented animal being moved out so a less well represented male can be moved in.

Whipsnade have not got an adult bull(or didn't have recently) so it is most likely the subadult male born there which has gone to PL.

You are correct but I believe plans are a foot to change that, seeing as we now have 2 collections in this country that will be holding Pure Reticulated Giraffes now.

I can't remember if Whipsnade's last breeding bull died or was sent away to Europe- it is on here somewhere.

Last year they had two adult females- one(Summer) born there plus one new arrival(Ina?) from Dvur(?) Also two male offspring of Summer, most likely its the older one which has gone to Port Lympne now.

I'm sure a new male is in the pipeline for Whipsnade if they haven't got one recently. This group has struggled rather- originally they imported 2.3 but over time seem to have lost all the original females and have had nearly all male calves born.

Went to Whipsnade, not the best of starts as when we got there the walkway between the wolverine and bears was shut for maintenance!! After the new enclosures not being finished the last time we visited we did think we would never see the wolverine. Also no sign of the lynx on the first visit.

The zoo was quite busy for midweek, forgot that some schools close for polling!

Later in the day the bridge opened and I saw my first (and second) Wolverine, the male in the quarantine pen came right up to the wire and happily sat there, the female, well we saw a blob in the tree, which we were assured was a wolverine!

The baby elephant was all legs still and congratulation for whoever paid £1,850.00 on ebay to name him! (my partner refused to bid even though I told him I would name it Ian :p)

Saw both Lynx, both hiding, but no sign of the moose this time.

Loads of deer in the bluebells (which were stunning), wallabys and joeys and peacocks everywhere but all day we only saw one Mara very odd? Has anyone else noticed a lack of them, they are usually everywhere?

Lovely day (as usual) at Whipsnade, the grounds were looking at their best, very clear day so the views were stunning and impressed with the new guidebook, a very good mixture of animals, keeper information, history but also alot of information about the surroundings.

Visited yesterday as part of a Bartlett Society meeting at Whipsnade, was very impressed with the work done on the Wild Wild Whipsnade area,ok so alot of the enclosures need time to mature, but give that they have built 3 new enclosures and Houses and re-furbed the old Cheetah enclosure for Lynx and resigned the whole area all for a budget of only £250,000,they really have done a superb job in creating this area.

Agree entirely about Wild Wild Whipsnade - very nicely done and they've made that cash go a long way. Once the new exhibits (particularly the Wolverine one) have bedded in a bit it will be very good indeed.

And, of course, nice to catch up with everyone at the meeting - both those on ZooChat and those not - my first as an official Bartlett member! :D
