Edinburgh Zoo New Arrivals in 2009

Any angle on their exhibit at Yorkshire Wildlife Park? Hard standing (better) or grasslands ...?
(Or should I move that over to the YWP thread instead ...)

Its a very large Grass Paddock but they do have hard standing areas around the house, personnaly think they will have to make a larger hard standing area if they build up large numbers of the Addax which i`m sure they will!

The herd of 8 heck cattle arrived last night and are situated in the top paddock, opposite the top of the lion walk

If anyone has any info on how the two new drill girls, Nora and Eschu, are doing I would be very interested. Also if anyone has any photos I would be very appreciative! Thanks!

It seems as though all 5 have been mixed together as from September, and successfully too.
An excerpt from the zoo blog;

You may recall that 2 new drills arrived at Edinburgh Zoo earlier in the year. Since then, we have reported on keepers’ efforts to slowly mix the 2 new females with our existing group of drills. Initial introductions went well, and finally, on the 14th September all 5 drills spent the night together. We are happy to say that the next morning, all 5 were found healthy and well, and without injury! Since then, the new five-some have been spending extended periods of time together, but have not yet moved in permanently together. We have our fingers crossed for future breeding from this group, as drills are Africa’s most endangered primate.

Fingers crossed now for a successful breeding soon

Not arrived yet but there is a very large delivery arriving at the zoo very very soon. The exhibit the new 'delivery' will be added to will increase the zoo's collection of this species by 100%

Any chance of naming it or do you just prefer to tease with cryptic messages?;)

Is it a pair of female Indian Rhino?

I would tell and i really want to but i don't know if it has been made public yet. Once i know that it has, i will be happy to discuss it. But what i can say is that it should arrive withiin the next month or so

No not rhino, but that would be amazing, the next rhino arrival will probably be another male once one of ours leaves to become a breeding male

I very much doubt they would get allocated two females by the EEP. I was under the impression that once the males are older, and the new exhibit is built, they would send away one male and get given a female. Still, I was wrong on belfast's otters so...

Its not a member of the Chiroptera order of mammals??

No its not, and there will be no female rhino coming to Edinburgh until they are moved from what is a temporary enclosure.
Well whatever it is I suppose will be something very intresting for a zoonerd like myself so I will just wait and see what little gem Ian has dug up this time for Edinburgh.

I remember talking to a bird keeper a while back and he said there was as he said in the pipe line to exhibit birds of paradise as he has a fascination with them would be good for the zoo to have this and a bat cave like chester zoo it was fun and scary at the same time : - )

A little speculative I know, but the above may imply something currently held singularly due to be paired up. Given, to my knowledge, there's no major building at moment I'd also imagine it's coming into an existing exhibit.

Aye-aye or anything single in carnivores row?

Unless the post actually meant there is currently 0% of this species at the zoo at the moment, but thats not how I read it.

Am I right in thinking the Aye aye is one of a pair on loan from Vincennes zoo, did the other animal die?

No criticsim of you (who obviously inteprets the information as I do), but zero to more than zero is an infinite increase, not 100%:)
