Edinburgh Zoo New Arrivals in 2010

At one time Edinburgh Zoo had a thriving and long established colony of Free-flying Night Herons, presumably after a previous escape. I remember seeing them on a couple of visits in the past. A book on non-native/introduced animals I have also mentions them as 'flying down to feed in the Campsie Burn'

Did that colony die out or are these birds connected to it in some way?

Was quite surprised to see this article in the newspapers. I have seen these night herons at the zoo on many visits. They do indeed seem to loiter around the sea lion enclosure. But have been there all of this year from what I have seen (certainly when I visited early on in the year and again during summer visits).

I'm sure that I recall that Edinburgh caught up all (or at least as many as possible) of the herons as they were not 'native'. Possibly the colony was already in decline? I believe that Night-herons were native to the UK in the past, however.

They did and I think these 2 birds managed to evade them, they have been around a few months.
