New enclosures 2024

In the Netherlands (that I know of):

- Avifauna's new vulture aviary with Southern ground hornbills, Rüppels griffons and White-headed vultures, and separate enclosures for Bat-eared foxes and Meerkats. This aviary was planned to be finished end of this year, but construction hadn't even started yet during my september visit so I doubt it's finished yet...

- Churchill river region in Aquazoo leeuwarden, with three new enclosures:
- Striped skunks and Northern raccoons
- North Eurasian ravens and Bald eagles
- American beavers, North American porcupines, Mississippi paddlefishes and Rainbow trout

- Koalia in Ouwehands, with three new enclosures for Queensland koalas and Parma wallabies, as well as an unspecified line-up of butterflies in the central greenhouse.

- GaiaZOO is opening two new areas: Pantanal with Pied tamarins, Black howler monkeys and Bush dogs. And the Limburg aviary with Black storks, Eurasian eagle-owls and North Eurasian ravens.

- Zie-Zoo is working on a new scavenger aviary, with Marabou storks, Western black kites, and African white-backed and Eurasian griffon vultures, among others.

Some others:

Reopening of the Meeresmuseum Stralsund after 4 years of renovation in the summer. New will be a 700.000 litre Caribbean tank with a viewing window of 8.3 X 9.7 metres. The museum will house a total of 31 aquaria. With the Ozeaneum, a large aquarium focused on native marine life (and penguins...), Stralsund will clearly be the aquarium capital of Germany.

Zoo Rostock: new enclosures for harbour seals and Cape fur seals. Should be opened end of summer

Tierpark Cottbus: renovation of carnivore house with new exhibits for giant otter, fishing cats and mongoose

Zoo Dresden: a new orangutan house with smooth-coated otters, binturongs, langurs and reptiles in spring. The 20 million euro house is designed as a circle with a 60 meter diameter with the orang utan and otter outdoor enclosures in the centre. Certainly one of the architectural highlights to look forward to. Opening is set for easter 2024

Tiergarten Nuernberg: A 450 metre treetops trail with an owl aviary, some amphibians (and IIRC forest reindeer) and loads of education. Should be complete soon.

Zoo Frankfurt: renovation of the lion enclosure should be completed

Zoo Dortmund: You never know in Dortmund, but the plans are to finish construction on the sea lion and fur seal exhibit.

Tierpark Bern: New European bee-eater aviary

Tiergarten Schoenbrunn: New exhibition with rare confiscated reptiles & amphibians in the former insect house.

I haven't heard much from the French zoos yet, but normally there will be something exciting going on there too ;)

Krakow zoo: new chimpansee and Japanese macaque exhibits are under construction, the chimpansee house is in raw concrete building stage.

Prague zoo: Przewalski horse exhibit, including manuls and steppe reptile tanks - opening in spring.

Usti nad Labem zoo: new gibbon enclosure (inside hoofstock pen near upper zoo entrance), or at least I hope they manage to open in 2024.

Jihlava zoo: Roloway monkey exhibit, and MAYBE howler monkey island.

Ostrava zoo: African penguin exhibit, but it might slide into 2025.

Hodonin zoo: small aquarium house

As far as I know there’s also the macaque+otter+babirusa enclosure at TP Berlin and, if renovations count, the Przewalskis wild horse enclosure along with the renovation of Dschungelwelt in Hellabrunn.
I noticed that I failed the mention that the Wild Horse enclosure renovation is in Prague. Apologies to anyone who may have confused it for taking place in Hellabrunn. A cringeworthy mistake on my part.

As @lintworm mentionned there was not a lot of communication about new exhibits in France for next and I am not sure it will be a great year for them but some greetings are already known :

Zoo de Mulhouse - Horizon Afrique
The most important investment in the zoo history is opening next year and is focussed on Africa with a dry african plain for giraffes, ostriches, antelopes... a tropical greenhouse for pygmy hippos and crocodiles + islanfs for L'Hoest and Roloway monkeys + lots of small species in the buildings.

More to read here : Zoo de Mulhouse - New project "Horizon Afrique" [Zoo Mulhouse]

Zoo de la Flèche - African savannah
Another big project for this year is on Africa with the creation of a 1 hectare african savannah for giraffes, ostriches, zebras and antelopes. This exhibit is a major addition for the zoo as the giraffes will leave their original historic and poor enclosure. This is part of a 5 years master plan which started this year with the new enclosures for lions and cheetahs.

The master plan is detailled here : La fleche zoo [Zoo de la Flèche]

Zoodyssee - French Guyana area first phase
After some delays in the planning and building works the zoo must open the first part of a brand new area focussed on French Guyana. In 2024 the visitors will be able to watch non temperated animals (which was a speciality of the park) such as giant anteaters, sloths, tamanduas, bush dogs, white-faced sakis, tamarins, parrots and snakes.

Zoodyssee news [Zoodyssee]

Zoo de la Boissiere du Doré - Amur leopards breeding station
The Zoo, now known for his large carnivores enclosures (2 hectares for lions, 2,2 hectares for brown bears, 3 hectares for sumatran tigers), will create a 8 000 square meters breeding station for the endangered Amur leopards (new species) on the location of old enclosures.

Zoo de la Palmyre - Sumatran tigers area
One of the most old fashion french zoo continues his renovations. One of the first part of the zoo is being rebuilt for sumatran tigers, asian small-clawed otters, african penguins (already in this area before) and new aviaries (for which species ???). Don't expect too much about this but there are notable advances with the destruction of the horrible jaguars exhibit (the species left) and the use of the former bears pits that will enlarge the space for the animals.

Parc Animalier de Sainte Croix - White-tailed sea-eagles aviary and new farm
In 2024 the park will creat a new 700 square meters and 8 meters high aviary for a pair of white-tailed sea-eagles. The park will work with Les Aigles du Léman for this project (who created a breeding program for reintroduction in the Léman area). Two birds from the late will arrived to Sainte-Croix to mate and start breeding. After a first clutch the pair will return to Les Aigles du Léman to continue to breed. The chicks are due to be released as soon as possible.
Another new exhibit is the creation of a 1,5 hectare farm for domestic animals.

Worth mentionning that after a great year Beauval will do very few (even the new tropical greenhouse entrance should have been delayed). You could just expect something new in the former coatis exhibit (who left for the giant south american aviary) and in the former sunda gharials nursery in the tropical dome.

Two other new exhibits in addition :

Safari de Peaugres - European ground squirrels
In the foot safari the park wants to add a european ground squirrels exhibit... in what looks like a walkthrough ! Wait and see

Zoo de Bordeaux Pessac - New lions exhibit and other
The Zoo is building a new enclosure for lion with (unfortunately) a new accomodation lodge. But there is a positive thing : the lions will have a day and night access to the enclosure.
Other news is that the south-american pampa will be enlarged and get new residents : maned wolves.

Thanks, no plans known for Doué or are they saving for their Asian plans?

• In Sóstó Zoo(Hungary) the new Polar area will open in this spring. The name is Jégkorszak (IceAge).

• In Zoo Budapest maybe in this year the city of Budapest and the government of Hungary will find a solution for the half-finished BioDome.
(They stopped the constructions few years ago, because, the budget was much higher than anyone could have predicted.)

I fill some gaps for Austria.
  • @lintworm already mentioned the new house for confiscated herps at Tiergarten Schönbrunn/Zoo Vienna. Another project is the renovation of the lower floor of the tropical house. Sadly there are no more information about this project so far.
  • Zoo Schmiding builds new indoor enclosures for its lemurs (ring tailed and black and white ruffed ones)
  • Tierwelt Herberstein builds a new indoor habit for squirrel monkeys
  • Alpenzoo Innsbruck will open a new enclosure for wolves at the highest point of the zoo. The lynx exhibit will be expended to the current wolf exhibit afterwards.
  • Haus des Meeres will rebuild the areas for venomous snakes and tropical fresh water fish
  • Salzburg Zoo: The aviary for budgerigar and the small tropical house should reopen this year
  • Haus der Natur Salzburg: After 1,5 years the rebuild reptile zoo will open its gate this year

To complete the list for France :

Parc Animalier des Pyrénées :
Arrival of three new species : Chinese dholes, siamangs and yellow-footed rock wallabies.

Espace zoologique de Saint-Martin la Plaine :
Opening of a new chimpanzees house (with 5.000 square meters outdoor) and arrival of giraffes (for the first time ever).

Domaine de la Bourbansais :
New african savannah with ostriches, zebras and greater kudus. The zoo has already something like a savannah so I suppose it is just some refurbishment with new species.

Parc animalier de la Barben :
It was announced for last year but was not done so it is expected for 2024 : new exhibit for komodo dragons. This park has done really nice exhibit in the last few years especially for reptiles so I hope a great outdoor for the dragons.

Cerza :
Maybe the big suprise for this year to be confirmed : on the french forum "Les zoos dans le monde" a member said the white tigers will go to the past gelada baboons exhibit and their space will see arrival of great apes (species not known already). A big surprise as a such exhibit need major building works which is not what Cerza likes to do. Moreover the zoo was not interested in great apes since the chimps left two decades (or so) ago.

So an interesting year for the country finally ;)

New additions and corrections for France :

Zoo de Labenne :
New enclosures for squirrel monkeys and toco tucans (new species) will be added.

Branfere :
Arrival of Javan langurs (new species) and new or refurbished enclosure for the red pandas. The marine space is refurbished too but don't know how (the harbour seals must have left as I have indicated some months ago so maybe the Humboldt penguins will have the whole area).

Parc animalier d'Auvergne :
New mixed exhibit for 4 binturongs, 2 tufted deers and 2 prevost squirrels.

Zoo de Lille :
After the departure of the two southern white rhinos, the zoo wants to renew the african area to welcome smaller and endangered species. No more info for the moment.

Corrections of my previous posts here :

Zoo de la Boissiere du doré :
No news of the amur leopards breeding station so maybe delayed. To be confirmed.

Cerza :
It as been confirmed that the white tigers will take the former gelada baboons exhibit (for easter) but there are new informations for their actual exhibit. The zoo wants to create a "great new exhibit" about South America in 2025. So no great apes there (as it was discussed before) but we have no more information about the species we could expect.

Zoodyssee :
It seems that the building works for the new South American area take more and more times. So for this year we must have a first enclosure with coatis (new species). Nevertheless, some other exhibits opened/will open quickly for european badgers (return of the species), red foxes, european wild cats and northern raccoons.
